"The 1954 Alumni Fund Report will appear in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE as a special-8page supplement inserted in the middle of the December issue, but the lists o£ contributors will be printed with the class notes as usual. We therefore request that the notes for December be kept as concise as possible and that some items, where the time element is not pressing, be held over for the following month. The Fund lists this time will be the longest we have ever printed."
In compliance with the above request I am making these notes concise, yielding space for the Alumni Fund report.
A few weeks ago X received a telephone message from "Dud" West, saying he and his good wife were at the Hanover Inn and would drive down to see me. I immediately drove up to Hanover and brought them home with me. Later on I received the following message:
"We came through our 3060-mile trip with no accidents and Margaret feeling better. Tomorrow Margaret has her 83rd birthday and she is aging very fast; eats better and sleeps, but is short of breath most of the time. Of course the prognosis in her case is uncertain but I feel that any more long trips will not be taken.
"If I am able I shall certainly be at our 60th reunion, probably by train and maybe alone by train.
"We both enjoyed our short stay with you and it perhaps was our high point of the trip, but in all our visits our friends were just lovely to us.
"Is it possible that Dartmouth has a football team to be proud of at last? Its beating Harvard gives hope but Yale and Cornell are just too strong, I am afraid.
"There is no doubt that you are much better for that is the way you looked, and I hope you won't be cursed with pain for you don't deserve it. Love to you and Robert, Dud."
