Bequest Chairman,

This is the annual Alumni Fund issue and therefore we'll try to be brief in order to make room for the list of contributors.

It is an appropriate time to extend the thanks of the entire Class to Bill Cogswell and his hard-working group of assistants for the splendid work they did. Once again the Class contributed very substantially to the College —in the amount of $12,627.

After three strenuous years as Class Agent, Bill is stepping down and the class executive committee has elected Herm Schnepel of South Orange, N. J., to take his place. Herm volunteered as an Assistant Class Agent way back in 1933 and has been working hard for the Class ever since, except 1941-45 when he was in Army Counter intelligence in this country, England, France and Germany. Herm is sales manager for New Jersey, Deleware and District of Columbia for the F. E. Compton Co., publishers.

An Associated Press feature story on October 6 said:

"Irked by several fumbles he saw in a Yale-Dartmouth football game four years ago, ArthurGow, six-foot one-inch, 200-pound Dartmouth tackle"in the late 19205, decided something should be done about it, and he did. The president of a rubber company (he was the veep then) called the staff together.

" 'Those fumbles in the Yale-Dartmouth game the other day drove me nuts,' he remembers having said. 'We won by a touchdown, but there's too much fumbling these days. Something should be done about it, and we can do it.' After four years and the expenditure of more than $20,000, Gow recently introduced at numerous football clinics throughout the East a ball with ridges on its cover. The ridges are new. The shape of the football is the same. Eastern football coaches are enthusiastic about it and Gow is now working to get the ball approved by the college rules committee."

Art is president of the Seamless Rubber Co., New Haven.

Speaking of New Haven, John Phillips and Cal Billings report having seen the following at the Yale game: Warren Burding, Fred Cheever, Bill Cogswell, John Cronin, John Flanagan, Art Gow, Mai Halliday, Bill Heep. Court Keller, George Klein, Dick Klinck, Son Middlebrook, Herb Russell, Steele Smith, Bill Treanor, Beef Vernon, Bud Weser and Jack Zellers. There were undoubtedly others but because of the rain they didn't show at Portal 30 between the halves.

At the New York class dinner at the Dartmouth Club November 4 the attendance was small but the boys had a good bull session and decided to have another dinner February 16. Joe Smith agreed to be dinner chairman and try to round up fifty or so for the next one. Present besides Joe were Paul Kruming, Hank Walker, Bill Cogswell, Court Keller, Fred Cheever and John Phillips. The February affair is scheduled far in advance to give out-of-towners a chance to arrange their plans. Two regulars sent regrets - Art Holden was deer hunting, and Gerry Johnston was in California.

Tune in on Dick Rendell's Coast-to-Coast radio commentary on ABC, Mondays through Thursdays. It is heard over WABC in New York at 10:15 P.M. Bob Rockhill was in Washington recently and had lunch with Dick.

We want to extend the sympathy of the Class to AI Fusonie, whose wife, Dorothea, died October 9. It was very sudden - she died in his car while Al was rushing her to the hospital. Those of you 'who attended reunion will remember seeing Dorothea and Al and their two fine boys. Doug is now a freshman at Dartmouth and Alan is a day student at Malvern Prep. Their home is at 124 E. Marthart Ave., Havertown, Pa.

In spite of Democratic victories elsewhere, Lane Dwinell was elected governor of New Hampshire. When he takes office he will also become an ex-officio trustee of Dartmouth. Congratulations to our first governor and first Dartmouth trustee!

Jack McGuire, former Democratic State Chairman in Connecticut, caused a sensation by bolting his party four days before election day to support Governor Lodge, Republican. Lodge lost. Jack said that the Democrats, in raising the religious-racial issue, "have set back the cause of inter-racial and inter-faith understanding more than a generation."

The Class of '28 held a class dinner in Hong Kong in October with 100% attendance. George Bell writes that he and Hsi JuiShen had lunch and then, as we had requested, had a picture taken. As George says:

"H. J. is quite a guy. After graduating with us, he stayed on another year and got an M.C.S. from Tuck School before returning to China, where he soon joined the staff of the Bank of China. His unusual talents for business administration were discovered early by the Nationalist Government, because he was appointed to increasingly important government jobs. He was deputy general manager of a provincial bank, general manager of a railroad, at the end of the war in 1945 he became assistant general manager of the Central Trust of China, which was the central purchasing agency for the Chinese Government and which also conducted barter deals with other governments. In 1949 he became general manager of this organization and thus became the top economic administrator in the government.

"Following the Communist conquest of China, H. J. escaped to Hong Kong. He was without resources other than his considerable talents. Starting from scratch he again established himself in the business world and is now managing director of the Maysun Trading & Investment Co., as well as Hong Kong branch manager of the Overseas Assurance Corporation Ltd. His success in pulling himself up by his bootstraps is certainly worthy of high praise."

We have a lot more news but will have to hold it for next month.
