As a follow-up on last month's story about Dartmouth's first streaker - Archie Holden, a letter from Archie answers questions I tried to ask by telephone while writing the original story. My call to Port Angeles went unanswered because Grace and Archie were attending a quarterly meeting of the Washington State Sportsmen's Council in another part of the state.
Archie wrote, "Yes, Os, the nurses did come by on schedule. In fact, I was not allowed to perform my 'streak' until they could be seen heading up from the Nugget Theater! The dormitory occupied by Bob, Van, and myself was Crosby - our 'suite' was on the second floor in front on the corner toward the Administration Building. Howie Bush, Ed Heyn, and MaurieMakepeace lived on the same floor.
"While my younger brother Parker '38, and his son Peter '74, might not be too surprised at my 1928 caper, people hereabouts just cannot picture 'staid old Uncle Archie' doing such a thing."
Sanibel Island, Fla., seems to be a popular place for '28ers to meet. Bill Embler writes "While on Sanibel we had a pleasant exchange of visits with Gertrude Heep and Fidelia Turner who had read in Stew Hoagland's Campaigner that we were planning to be there. Missed RemKinne whom I used to see quite often in Albany before my enforced retirement, now in its 13th year. Incidentally, we sold our out-of-print book business (New York State specialists) last November."
Feet Thurston sent us a nostalgic post card the other day - "College Campus from Hanover Inn Veranda" - 1928 sedans parked in front. Feet mentioned having enjoyed his visit to Yucatan, where Mary and I vacationed in February.
One goes south; one north. George andEleanor Klein, following George's retirement from the valve business, have moved from Pittsburgh, Pa., to 1385 Harbor Drive, Sarasota. Milt and Peggy Hoefle went north, not very far - just from Brooklyn, N.Y., to 478-B Heritage Village, South bury, Conn., joining five other '28ers in Heritage Village: ElDrake, Ev Field, Craig Haines, Bob Kilgore, andBob Tyson. (Tucson and Delray Beach are rival retirement locations, with five '28ers each, while Fort Lauderdale holds the lead with siz.)
After two years at Dartmouth Medical School, Milt Hoefle graduated from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was a physician and surgeon in Brooklyn for 43 years, just as his father had been before him. Milt was attending surgeon and chief of service at Methodist Hospital and Lutheran Medical Center. He spent almost four years in the Army as a captain and then major, operating in Army, Air Force, and Navy hospitals overseas for two years. His most interesting assignments were - and in this order - (1) Flying home from Rome in January 1946, (2) Surgery during the Battle of the Bulge and (3) Service to the troops in North Ireland during the six months prior to D-Day. His son Frank '57 is carrying on the family medical tradition in Brooklyn, after graduation from Dartmouth and Harvard Medical Schools.
Brougham Wallace wrote from his Delray Beach home in April that he and Claire had driven down to Miami for a reunion with Geneand Fran Magenis. In Delray Beach they have seen Charlie and Blim Hazzard, George and AgBoughton, and Jack Waller.
Wes Patience says he has just retired after 22 years with the Millville (N.J.) Manufacturing Co., but is still doing a little self-employed accounting work which, with gardening and church work, keeps him busy.
Ellie Jones writes that he and Nellie spent two days with Hod and Viv Carver in their beautiful new home in the Catalina Mountains just out of Tucson. One evening they all enjoyed having dinner with Del Worthington '26 and his wife Wilma, a classmate of the Joneses in high school in Wilmette, Ill.
Ruf Munsell's oldest granddaughter is a freshman at the University of Vermont . . . The Job Placement Chairman of the Dartmouth Club of Northwestern Connecticut is Ken Tyson '57, one of Bob Tyson's twin sons.
Have a good summer.
Plan on attending the '28 Fall Reunion over the October 12 weekend. If you want reservations at the Norwich Inn, write the Inn before August 1.
Have a good summer.
