It was a proud moment for '28 and Dartmouth when on Dec. 8 Myles Lane was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame at the awards dinner at the Waldorf Astbria Hotel in New York. Dr. MiltHoefle of Brooklyn was the only '28er to witness the historic event—John Phillips,Bill Morton and your secretary all tried to get tickets, but found you have to be a member of the Hall of Fame or an invited guest, to get tickets. Myles had two guest tickets and gave one to his brother and one to Milt. When he tried to get a ticket for another brother he found there were none available. Hopefully we will get a first hand report from Myles and Milt at the annual '2B dinner in New York on Jan. 27.
Ralph Church retired as vice president and general counsel of the Equitable Life Insurance Co. of lowa on Sept. 1. Ralph graduated from Harvard Law and then practiced law in Des Moines, joining the legal staff of Equitable in 1939 and becoming general counsel in 1959. His principal hobby is unique among '28ers— he likes to go on canoeing trips in the wilds of Canada.
Smiling Joe Chay, our Korean classmate who has lived in Taiwan since being forced to flee Shanghai when the Japanese arrived, sent Christmas greetings with the news that his daughter and her husband and son had come to visit him and Moon from Los Angelas.
Don and Billee Solis finally found just the place they were looking for, a condominium in Sarasota, Fla. An interesting sidelight is that they have moved from Harvard Ave., Tulsa, to 3394 Dartmouth Lane. How is that for planning?
The West Coast of Florida seems to be gaining in popularity over the East Coast with 28'ers. Dana and Verna Condon, who retired last October from United Fruit Co. after 42 years of "fruitful and loyal" service (the pun is Dana's!) have bought a home at 5949 Nutmeg Ave., Sarasota, and are busy furnishing it.
On Nov. 1 Larry Miter had a heart attack but after a three-week stay in the hospital is back home at 7618 Fairdale Lane, Houston, Texas, following the doctor's orders about getting plenty of rest.
Barney Norton reports that he and Ellen were happy to have the whole family (four children and four grandchildren) with them over Christmas for the first time in years. Their son, John, is about to leave the armed services after an outstanding record. Barney spoke of the wonderful picture Tim and Virginia Paige used on their Christmas card of themselves surrounded by four children and six grandchildren. Barney has a very interesting job at the Weeks School, a correctional co-ed school in Vergennes, Vt.
Although permanent residents and staunch supporters of all civic affairs in Portsmouth, N. H., Sherm and MarieBaketel make an annual junket southward during the winter, spending most of the winter in Englewood, on Florida's west coast. Quick reference to an atlas reveals they are only 30 miles south of Sarasota, and 12 miles south of Nokomis, where Tony and Frances Costello live.
John and Barbara Lawrence bought a small mobile home on Sanibel Island (Periwinkle Way T.P.) near Fort Myers last Thanksgiving and plan to stay there until April or May before returning to Marion, Mass. About the first thing they did was run into Rem and Rel Kinne who again are spending the winter trailering in Florida. The Kinnes plan to return to Sanibel in February. Since this seems to be an East Coast issue, we might mention that the Ed Purnells, Lin Grays, and PhilSherman all live in St. Petersburg.
A card from Paris indicates our gay bachelor, Roy Myers, spent Christmas there.
Don't get the idea that all '28ers are retired and moving to Florida or Arizona— a large majority of us are still working five days a week. Let's hear from the silent majority.
It is with sadness that we report the death of two good friends, Jack Phelan and Charlie Crosby,—Jack of a heart attack at home and Charlie in an auto accident—both on December 13. Jack will long be remembered as a football star and for his unceasing work for Dartmouth in many capacities. The Class offers its sympathy to Jack's widow, Grace, and to his children, and to Charlie's only survivor, his brother Godfrey.
