December 1954 JOHN J. FOLEY, JOHN E. GILBERT, JAMES F. WENDELL

By the time this anomalous aggregate of notes, quotes and pithless patter gets by the censors and adds to the load of the unsuspecting postman - unsuspecting because he probably thinks he is laboring under something really weighty like the Harvard Business Review or the December issue of Terry and thePirates - the incomparable class of '34 may have been hit with more than a hint that this coming June we gather under the towering elms, the sweltering tents or the beer-stained tables in reunion assembled.

Which brings to mind that at that stage somebody is going to point to ye sec and say something which in the polished prose of Batton, Barton, Durstine and Osborne may sound different, but which will mean, "What the hell you been doing the last five years?' Horrible thought!

Course if you happened to ask right now, we've been busy as a b - , or however you spell it, the last month.

We sat in on a meeting in Boston at which the College gathered together under its wing and a thick roast beef those interested in the problems of reunion this year. It's a revelation to see how Dartmouth watches out for the stumbling steps of even the most inept of the brethren. Not that we'll be inept with Dwyer at the helm, far from it!

Then along with ye treas, we met, just slightly to one side of the careening merry-go-round at the Copley, with elder statesman Bill Scherman (and boy is he getting elder; he'll have a married daughter very soon). Shortly thereafter we repaired to the game in which Dartmouth defeated a motely crew of students who almost weekly gather by the Charles River to play a game which before the days of Bill Bingham was more than generally described as football. Gilbert and Foley couldn't sit with the class group as the treasurer didn't have the treasury with him, but Scherman did join them and reported Dr.Bob Smith, Dr. Win Watts and a couple of others we didn't write down, as usual; and he also reported that some young fellow came up to look over the old guys of 1934 because his father was in that class. Young John King, son of Jamie King, is at Dartmouth and the records say that he has an older brother at Cornell.

Finally we made a quick check on Hanover just as Columbia arrived to play football and many several girls arrived for house parties. Sports Note - Dartmouth won't get too badly hurt in the Ivy League. Fashion Note - the above-mentioned Doc Smith on his questionnaire reported that he found the day of the dirty corduroy pants gone in Hanover - now everyone wears dirty chinos. We can add to that on party dress. Dartmouth kids are evidently now dating Eskimaux - the dress of day (November 6) for females seemed to be some sort of a pantaloon abomination known to my No. 2 daughter as Bermudas. In fact one young lady rode up Main St. on the back of a motorcycle with nothing between her and eternity except those same shorts. My, my!

Speaking of questionnaires, we're up to our big flapping ears in them and here we are practically shooting the useless breeze - and this a short month on the copy, too. But first, let's look in the mail-bag.

NAMES IN THE NEWS, for instance Out of the classic pages of the Boston Herald one can find that hotelman John J. Dineen was recently elected president of the Hampton Beach Chamber of Commerce.... That Richard L. Emerson, a Chartered Life Underwriter, an eight-year member of the National Million Dollar Round Table and consistently winner of the National Quality Award for outstanding service to his insurance clients, was honored at a luncheon given by his company on the occasion of his twentieth anniversary.

Down in Meriden, Conn., too, they have newspapers and one of them announces that George Magrath, Meriden High School principal, has been named division chairman in the local Red Feather campaign. George, whose more familiar appellation might startle his pupils, has been at Meriden since November 1949, moving there from the principalship at Glastonbury, Conn., High School. Previous to that he taught, coached and principled schools in Sedgwick, Maine, Essex Junction, Vt., Sandwich, Mass., and Hartford, Conn. In 1943 he received a Master's degree in education from the University of Vermont after

attending summer sessions there for some years. George is married to the former Miriam Phipps of his home town, Whitinsville, Mass., and they have three boys Somewhere very close to this area, we hope, should appear, courtesy of The Chattanooga Times and Brother Houck, the very fine Gussenhoven family visiting on Lookout Mountain from Mexico City. ... We also had a clipping which we were going to title "Man at Work," if we had come up with a glossy, which we didn't. Showed U. S. Atty. W. Langdon Powers, law books opened wide, in deeo conference at a hearing concerning a Worcester character he recently put on ice for tax evasion.

Now what was it we said about questionnaires .... Take Jim Benson as a starter. He's living in Needham, Mass., and doing group underwriting for John Hancock, but his principal claim to fame is that he'll be a grandpappy early in '55. His step-daughter Dorothy should give him first honors in this class And Ted Gregory, located last month through an address change at Hopkins Grammar School, Blanford, Conn., reports remarriage on June 16 to Elizabeth Hitchcock, in which quiet wedding he was attended by Dr. Frank Lepreau and Bill Hitchcock '33.... Or Carrie Hill, with Raytheon in Waltham, Mass., who tells of a boy Tom, in the Army at Fort Dix.... And we might turn over the rest of this column to Ed Klee from far-off Oakland, Calif., where he is married to the former Babette Frank of the U. of Calif., has two children, Virginia II, and John 10, is working with the Alameda County Welfare Commission. He breaks into verse which we write as prose,

"Sadly serious, sober and much too sedate - Ain't had much excitement of late — My nose is shiny from too much wear - And I'm getting dowdy and don't much care — My work is a rat race from dawn to dark - And when I get home I've lost mv bark - And yet if vou think I'm gonna complain — My life has much more fun than pain — So make the most of this poor little ditty - It's more full of froth than the darn thing is gritty."

Which may aptly describe our poor efforts this month, except that we know a fellow who can tack on here something that makes mighty good reading.

He's the fellow who lists, row on row, those who stood up to be counted when needed so now we would like to present '34's 405 MEN OF DISTINCTION:
