Well, here we are, starting our ninth and last article of this 1953-54 academic year. It seems as though only a couple of months ago, we were worrying about writing our first class column. I imagine that these past nine months have slipped by just as quickly for you and I hope that they have been happy ones. However, as we have a large backlog of news items piled up in front of me, let's get down to business.
Two Fulbright scholars, Lenny Johnson and John Green returning this summer from their studies abroad in France and Norway, respectively, to enter Harvard where each has received a resident fellowship for '54-'55.... Phil Metzidakis, having just completed a year of study at the Univ. of Mexico, now on his way to the Continent and the famed Univ. of Salamanca in Spain.... Tom Fraser and DaveSlowe enthusiastic about first-year studies respectively at the Union Theological and General Seminary Schools in New York City.... Each has two more years of study before receiving his divinity degree Two ambitious '53's Dave Martin and Ray Leubbe, completing their first-year studies toward Ph.D.'s in chemistry at the Univ. of Wisconsin. At last report, both Dave and Ray were quite single, unlike their chemistry compatriot Ed Knapp, presently working on his Ph.D. at Penn State. Married last July 4 to Carol Morgan, Ed reports that he and Carol are expecting an addition to the Knapp family sometime this summer.... Univ. of Michigan announces that Dick Simpsoti has been awarded a scholarship in recognition of his outstanding first-year record at its medical school, where he, is top man in his class.... Other first-year medics away from Hanover are Graft Sieber and Mayo Johnson, both confirmed bachelors. Graft is enrolled at Jefferson Medical and Mayo is attending the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University....And lastly a note from Annapolis tells of Midshipman Ed Grant, class of '55 at the Naval Academy. Not much like Dartmouth is it, Ed?
And on the business front... Gus Goss hoping to work in the N. Y. office of Vick Chemical after a year's tough training on the road. Included in Gus's future plans, a trip to Townshend, Vt. on Sept. 11 to marry Lillian Prakelt of that hamlet....Stan Bell busy in sales work for National Biscuit Co. since his graduation from Dartmouth last Feb. in an attempt to keep three mouths full. Stan is married to the former Cynthia Ward of Flushing, N. Y. and has a 6-month-old son.... Other new parents, Nancy and Dow DrukkerIII of Montclair, N. J., with the addition of Dow IV five months ago. Papa is presently supervisor of the circulation dept. of the CliftonHerald News. ...Jack Williams, having just finished his training program in Camden, N. J., for RCA, now working in Indianapolis. Jack's son is practically an old man, having celebrated his Ist birthday several months ag0.... In Chicago, Eric Van Schaack appears to have found a nice niche for himself as an industrial package designer for Container Corp. Eric attended the Art Institute until locating this job last Feb....From Milwaukee we learn of one '53 who is combining both work and studies. George Middleton manages to hold down a job with the First Nat. Bank of Milwaukee while attending Marquette's School of Bus. Administration. Apparently the work is so rough that George is looking forward to a "respite" in the Army shortly.
But, we have several '53's on the other side of the fence who might not agree with George on the relative merits of service vs. civilian life. Seaman Jack Upham, although engaged in interesting public relations work for the Navy in Norfolk and Bainbridge, admits he is most anxious to get back to his studies at Dartmouth. Jack and his missus, the former Elaine LeVeng, visited Hanover in late April and hope to return for a more permanent stay next Feb., bringing their 14-month-old son with them. Army veteran Bud Schweick returned to Hanover this semester to continue his education after a two-year service stint passed mainly on the West Coast and in Alaska. Bud expects to graduate next June, and already has resumed his active role in WDBS affairs. And in Durham, N. H., Houghton Carr, whose marriage we announced a few issues back, is now out of the Army and is majoring in mechanical engineering at the Univ. of N. H.
And word from the North Shore, Mass., informs us that Joe Parker will be hanging up his Coast Guard blues this summer. Mr. and Mrs. Parker (the former Joan Falvey of Swampscott) and their 10-month-old baby girl plan to settle down in Marblehead, Mass.
But let us turn now to the very crowded nuptial items.
Disregarding the bad omen of the Ides of March, Lt. Al Ives, USMC, took Patricia S. Brenner of New Haven as his wife on March 15 while fellow marine lieutenants Pete Reich and Fred Hill '52, lent their moral support. The bride, a graduate of New Haven Teachers College last June, and bridegroom are now living at Fort Sill, Okla. where Al is attending artillery school. And on the West Coast, HarryJackson and Martha P. Hamilton exchanged vows in a pleasant Sat. afternoon service in Oakland, Calif. Martha, a sophomore at the Univ. of California, plans to continue her studies while Harry finishes the last two years of law study at the same university.
Those are the only two recent wedding items we have for this issue, although several ceremonies involving '53's are scheduled for the summer months including: Barbara Nightingale of St. Joseph, Mo., and Colorado Univ., to John Wortley on Sept. 4. John, now a second-year medical student in Hanover, intends to finish his studies at the Univ. of Kansas....Sally Hickok of Summit, N. J., to Paul Bousquet on June 26. Graduating from the Univ. of Vermont where he was a member of the ski team in 1953, Paul has since been managing a ski area in the Berkshires. Sally incidentally is the daughter of E. S. Hickok '24....Valerie Wilcox of Woburn, Mass., and the Univ. of N. H. '54, to Fred England in early June depending on the date Ensign Fred must report for active duty. Fred just received his M.B.A. from Tuck School early this month.
Still more approaching weddings: Gay Brinckerhoff of Locust Valley, L. I., and Smith College '53, to Marine Lt. Barlow Goff. The wedding is tentatively scheduled for June 12 in Brookville, L. Medical School....Debbe D. Horton of Austin, Texas, and Smith College '54, to Kes Pierson now studying law at Penn. Unless the service interferes, Kes and Debbe plan to take the big step on July 3...and lastly, Frances L. Lyman of Crowley, La., to R. ' Skip" Adams, graduating this month from Thayer School.
And now for a brief summary of the class engagements: Ens. Dave Halloran now stationed at Pensacola, Fla., for flight training to Julia Boehringer of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Briarcliff Junior College....Russ Henry to Pauline Scott of Chatham, N. J., and Colby Jr. College. Since his graduation, Russ has been working for Prudential Insurance Co. and is attending special courses at, Rutgers business school. .. . Walt Von Lehn to Barbara Peabody of Portland, Me., and Smith College '54. Walt has just finished his second year of medical studies here in Hanover.... and lastly, Pvt. Dong Brown to Marion Grove of Sellersville, Pa., and Gettysburg College. Doug is presently stationed at Ft. Bragg, N. C., and writes that he has about 15 months of Army life still ahead of him.
We have space for but one papoose item... on April 19, Warren and, Joan Cassidy became the proud parents of twins, Joseph Jr. and Julie Ann. Congratulations.
Well, I fear that is about all for this year. The response to the information cards has been gratifying and I hope that those who have not returned theirs will do so shortly - with their names included. Remember the Alumni Fund and have A GOOD SUMMER.
