Spring is finally here and with it the annual Alumni Fund drive, providing us with the opportunity to partially repay our debt to Dartmouth and to help foster her future growth. Last year in certain respects we were disappointed in '53's performance, particularly as regards the size of the average contribution. This perhaps can be largely attributed to 1954's being a year of transition and uncertainty for most of us. Now 1954 is behind us and being better acclimated financially to our new surroundings, we should be more capable of answering the Alumni Fund's request for funds. How about seeing if all those who contributed $1 to $2 last year can raise their gift to a minimum .$5 level this spring, and moreover that those who probably for some excellent reason failed to respond in '54 will join the bandwagon this year and give the class a 100% participation figure.
NUPTIAL NONSENSE ... "Monk" Robinson and Natalia Young of New Canaan, Conn., are subjects of our first wedding this month. The big day for the Navy Ensign from Lookout Mt., Tenn., and the Smith College graduate was 24 February at St. Mark's Church, New Canaan. The Robinsons temporarily are living in Newport, R. I., where the groom is still apparently on destroyer duty. A couple of weeks later in Augusta, Me., Glenys Arlene Pooler of that city and Walt Lovett commenced their married life together. Walt, a former member of the "Little Green" football squad, transferred to Norwich U., Vt., after completing his freshman year in Hanover. Upon graduating from Norwich, he was commissioned a second lieutenant USA and is now stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Va.
Our only betrothal this issue involves JackTukey and Margot Hodgson. Unfortunately we have no further data except that an early summer wedding is planned. For the past year Jack has been serving with the Pacific Fleet and is about due for promotion to lieutenant (jg).
MILITARY MISCELLANY ... Other naval officers in the Pacific area include Dick Fleming, aboard the destroyer USS Hale; BobFahrenholz on the transport USS Keosonqua and Dave Donovan, recent recipient of his Navy wings, now assigned to a San Diegobased squadron. If we're not mistaken, HowieKoonce also has just won his wings, but we have no word as yet about his new duty station. No news either about Owen Cote's first Navy billet: Owen was to graduate with the April OCS class at Newport. Prior to entering Newport in January, Owen had been doing some graduate study at MIT in addition to holding down practically a full-time job.
At various East Coast naval establishments, however, one is liable to run across such '53s as Dave Replogle on the destroyer USS Healy;Seth Carpenter now aboard the USS Gold-finch, a mine sweeper; Johnny Harris serving on the carrier Leyte with Johnny Rogers; and Tom Wilson, Woody Spurgeon and CharlieKahle all assigned to amphibious detail around Norfolk. The latter three all earned their jg stripes the first of this year, while I believe the others are still keeping us company in ensign rank. A news clipping just received from Quantico reads that Bob Simpson ranked second in the graduating class of 340 from Marine OCS in February. Well done, Bob. He and fellow February graduates DickLombard and Karl Zimmerman are now undergoing five to seven months' basic training at nearby Camp Upshur.
Taking a glance at the Army, we see where Dave Picker apparently has "a good deal," teaching photography to officers and enlisted men attending Army Information School at Ft. Slocum, N. Y., - conveniently located a short distance from Dave's N.Y.C. home. By
the way, Dave, how is married life treating you? Dave mentions that Jay Kulp, a recent A.I.S. graduate, is now stationed near Puget Sound. Radio repair work has attracted the talents of Pfc Chip Luce at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. We understand that in addition he has been participating in the recent atomic experiments in Nevada. A note from Hanover reports that Dave Cost has been promoted to corporal, without any further details. The last we heard of Dave, he was attending the Army Language School at Monterey, Calif. This same note mentions that Todd Griffith is performing some Army chores in Japan and that Tom Kohler is serving as a hospital corpsman somewhere in the U.S. How about filling in the details, men?
ACADEMIC ANTICS...One of the February issues of the Saturday Evening Post carried almost a full-page picture of Ed Wood strolling on the U. of Va. campus. Ed is a second-year med student there and the picture was in conjunction with an article on segregation. Mike Zarin, a second-year Columbia Law School student, has had his handsome profile displayed in a recent issue of the New YorkSunday Times Magazine section in connection with his work in a New York legal aid clinic.
At Harvard, second-year Law student, PeteSchwarzkopf, has been elected an officer of his social organization, King's Bench. Pete Gartland, Jack Huck and Bill Crotty continue to pursue their law studies at U. of Michigan, but fellow prospective barrister Bill Beutel has temporarily curtailed his studies for service with Uncle Sam at Ft. Holabird, Md. We hear that Gail Beutel is expecting the first addition to the family shortly, and also that BillCrotty and Alice Blomquist will be taking out a marriage license before June passes. Back at Michigan, Dave Salter, Bill B.'s former roommate, will graduate from its Business School with Neil Bersch this June, while Marty Gold should receive his Master's degree in psychology at the same time. This June will also write finis to Tom Ritner's instructor position at Thayer School and Bob Yates' journalism study at Northwestern.
BUSINESS PROSPECTS ...Ward Hamm writes that of last December 1, he severed relations with Westinghou.se and joined Ditto Inc. of Chicago. He finds the new work very demanding. He's sales manager for nine New York and Pennsylvania counties, stationed out of his home town of Elmira, and claims he loves it, even though it' interferes with his golf. Two other happy '53 businessmen are WarrenCole and Howie Clery. Warren is a sales system writer for Recordak Corp., manufacturer of microfilm equipment, and works out of New Jersey; Howie has a nice desk job in the finance division of Gillette's Boston headquarters. Jim Cobb has decided to cast his lot with the field of finance, having recently joined the Chicago branch of the Harris Trust Co. The last we heard, Jim Penny was still serving as distributor for the Aluminum Cooking Utensil Co. We heard Jim's impressive sales talk on this new cooking equipment at Tuck School last year, and imagine by this time he must be well on the way to his first million. Since graduating from Thayer School last June, GeorgePassano has been allied with the National carbon Co., a branch of Union Carbide, in New York City; while fellow '54 Thayer graduates, Stan Jackson and John Cernius, have been busy this past year undergoing engineering training for G.E.
PAPOOSE SCOREBOARD... It was a baby boy for the John Dickasons on February The proud papa, still stationed at Ft. Dix, reports that Barbie and the baby are doing fine On their fourth wedding anniversary, March 10, Marilyn Keller presented husband Wayne with an extra special present in the pretty form of a baby girl, Susan Lynn. Since graduating from Tuck School in '54, the former Barbary Coast performer has been employed by the Penn Trust Co. in Lancaster, pa. And, finally, further word on the KentRobinson's baby informs us it is a boy, Jeffrey Curtis, born on December 2.
Have room to mention that we've just received cards from Johnny Rice (Army, Germany) and Burt Melcher (Navy, England) enthusing about sight-seeing trips through Europe. Johnny was accompanied by wife Helen while Burt went with Sigma Nu brother RogEwy, presently doing military engineering work in France. We think we would rather have been in Johnny's shoes.
