Back from a two-month cruise on the battleship Wisconsin as official Dartmouth representative, Coach Ellie Noyes is getting his "land legs" back under him over the five-mile cross-country course along with some twenty team candidates. Last fall the Green runners won four dual meets, dropped two and finished fourth in the Heptagonal championships. This autumn the Dartmouth runners might dupli- cate that record, but they will have to push a bit harder.
Three top runners - Captain Dick Hogarty, Pete Jebsen and Paul Merriken- were lost by graduation and the candidates coming along do not appear as strong, with the exception of this year's captain, Doug Brew. Brew ran well last fall, but really came into his own in the spring when he captured third place in both the Heptagonal and intercollegiate half-mile events. He is coming fast this fall and could better his ninth-place performance in the Heptagonal cross-country race last year.
Senior Phil Langtry and juniors John Hobbie and Jim Howe are the other returning veterans. Moving up from a better-than-average freshman squad are Pete Marshall, Dave Chapin, Jon Stokesbary, Bob Clothier, John Ceely and Pete Sinclair.
With practice runs barely three days old at this writing, Coach Noyes has had little opportunity to evaluate his squad.Judging from past performances, however, he predicts a fairly balanced team with Brew expected to be the top runner.
Along with its new V-system of attack Dartmouth will use a new triangular huddle this season. The backs line up at the rear, where the quarterback can watch the defensive maneuvering, and the linemen take their normal offensive positions, with the ends nearest the backs, then the tackles, guards and center in order.
Football lettermen back this fall include (l to r), front row - Pete Conroy, guard; Stan Klapper, guard; Tom Bechler, tackle; "Wayne Kakela, tackle; George Bixby, tackle; Berkeley Roth, end; Bob Adelizzi, center; Stu Klapper, guard; Monte Pascoe, end; Don Gray, end; RonFraser, end. Second row - Captain Leo McKenna, quarterback; Tom Hall, fullback; Bob Charman, halfback; Bill Beagle, quarterback; TomTrainor, halfback; George Krosnowski, tackle; Lee Beattie, halfback; Jack Nicolette, halfback; Lou Rovero, halfback; John Koehring, tackle;and Larry Karacki, guard.
