The Southern California Association held their annual boy-girl party on August 6. A group of sixty sailed in the chartered luxury cruiser Celeste to Catalina Island, where a day of swimming, sunbathing and sightseeing was thoroughly enjoyed. Cocktails were served in the Chi Chi Room of the Isthmus Inn and dinner was served in the cool, outdoor patio. The seafarers returned to the mainland in the evening tired and sunburned, but well satisfied, having escaped smoggy, go-degree Los Angeles for a day. Making the trip were John and Mary Beatty, Ludor and Elsie Capek, Ted and Theane Corsones, Bud Adams, Jack Allen, John Cowart, Walt Dodd, George and Marion Hamilton, Doc Dana Howe, Dick Millikan, Will Hays, Bob and Liz Jackson, Garth and Patty Jones, Dick and Ruth Nelson, Bill and Susie Montgomery, Bruce Matherson, Lou and Frances Poitras. Ted and Cheryl Rector, Paul Robertson, Bob Purvis, Charley and Fern Schaaf, Bill and Tia Short, Gordie and Doris Thomas, Herman Whitmore and daughter Jean, Eric and Elsie Rafter, Paul Wenger and Walt and Mary Jane McCurdy.
Recently an informal luncheon was held at the Los Angeles Town House honoring eleven young men from the Southern California area who have been accepted by the College for the Class of 1959. Short talks were made by John Lyman, John Beattv and BobWilliams and a free-for-all question and answer period attempted to give the boys a quick insight into Hanover mores. The entire association will watch their progress for the next four years and welcome them into the group when they return. Their pictures and those of the luncheon sponsors are included in this issue.
The Los Angeles Club is looking forward to the Western Regional Conference to be held in San Francisco, October 6-9. We plan to have a substantial representation present up in our largest suburb and guarantee to give President Dickey, Sid Hayward and entourage a royal Western welcome.
The regular monthly luncheons of the Southern California Association are firmly established at the Blarney Castle, 623 South Western Ave., and in July we were honored with the presence of an outstanding Tuck School graduate, Christopher Buxton. Mr. Buxton graduated from Cambridge and attended Tuck on an international Rotary scholarship. He proved a very interesting guest and a rare personality. Frank Danzig prevailed upon him to appear on Frank's show, Mr. Genius, televised in Los Angeles, and Chris turned in a sterling performance. Truly an asset to the ranks of Dartmouth sons.
