The Los Angeles Association had the honor and pleasure of hosting coach Karl Michaels at a dinner in the lovely Garden Room of Richlor's Restaurant on La Cienega Boulevard, Thursday evening, November 1. The inimitable Jay Urstadt '49, captain of the Big Green swimming team in 1948, acted as Master of Ceremonies and handled the introduction of "Mike" in his customary shy, modest and unassuming manner. After the exuberant vocal accolade bestowed by the MC upon him, Mike was momentarily undecided whether to give Urstadt a deep bow or a resounding backhand.
The strictly informal function was preceded by cocktails and, because of a sight mix-up in the kitchen, this period was somewhat overextended. No one seemed to be put out over the delay and Bill Adams '34, was given the opportunity of introducing his latest concoction. He presented the "Adam's Eyeball" consisting of vodka and carrot juice, claiming, "It leaves you breathless and blind, but you can still breathe and see."
Local members of the class of 1949 turned out en masse for the occasion and included were Quent Kopp, Gus Farnsworth, Gordy Thomas, Bud Hughes, Jay Urstadt, Ted Rector and Bob Purvis. Others present to honor Mike before his departure for Melbourne were Leon Rothschild '24, Woody Isham '28, Ed Plumb '29, Chuck Robinson '31, Dr. Dana Howe '31, President Ed Ramsay '35, Wayne Shrodes '39, Dick Hefler '36, and a host of others running all the way up to Dick Terizan '56. The association wishes all the luck in the world to Mike and his divers and hopes they can bring home more gold medals than in 1952.
