After an ultra quiet summer, which even saw our regular monthly luncheons suspended until September 26, the Southern California Association is girded and ready for a sparkling fall season. We must blame our lethargy on our semi-tropical weather, this summer being the hottest on record in our area.

In spite of the doldrums, our Enrollment Committee, ably chairmaned by Dick Milliken '50, turned in the greatest job of "selling Dartmouth" yet seen in California. Geographically we cover more territory than any other association in the country and the work of Dick's committee in covering over 150 highschools and prep schools represents a gigantic effort. 82 completed applications were forwarded to Hanover. 42 candidates were accepted by the College. 22 men matriculated with the class of 1961. The majority of those not journeying to New England were prevented from doing so by financial considerations. That these people could not attend the college of their choice demonstrates how much farther corporations, foundations and individual alumni must develop their scholarship potentials.

Mark Lansburgh '49, did a marvelous job in our Santa Barbara area as did Bill Montgomery '52, in Pomona and San Bernardino. Ferb Haight '21, handled Beverly Hills and Santa Monica in his usual conscientious fashion and Dick Hefler '36, and Rudy Pacht '35, worked wonders in the San Fernando valley. All those assisting in this very vital contribution to Dartmouth cannot be listed in our limited space, but Chairman Milliken feels the following proved of inestimable value: Dick Nelson '38, Chuck Robinson '31, Gordy Thomas '49, Larry Schaefer '49, Bob Jackson '51, Eric Rafter '37, Will Hays '31 and of course the real standby, Leon Rothschild '24. Many thanks from the College and the Southern California Association to these men and all the others participating. Monthly luncheons have been re-convened at Lindy's 3656 Wilshire Blvd. the last Thursday.
