November shadows lengthen across the gridiron. Hope that plenty of the tribe was able to gather around the field to cheer the winning of the Green.
Delayed Buck
Opening this fall's campaign, at last, is our "Class Boy." Maintaining the position for '54 is Master John Arthur Buffington, born last June 5. Now carrying the bawl through his first year with parents Jack and Jane (Fellows) Buffington of St. Paul, Minn., young John, who reported in with "blond hair, blue eyes and a pointed head" was born the same day his Pa was receiving his Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Tuck. As official recognition of his accomplishment, the Class has sent John an engraved, silver baby cup shaped, appropriately, like a beer mug. Jack reports that the youngster has been completely equipped with miniature Dartmouth letter sweater and little green booties. He is expected to bolster the Class of '76.
A prospective cheer leader is trying out with Lt. Jack and Jean Godfrey USMC. Kathleen Collins Godfrey made her debut on April 10. And a new permanent fixture at Dave andKathy Gleason's (labelled Colleen - their second) was recorded some time last spring.
Holding Penalty
No longer running the broken field this season are our engaged and married teammates. In the betrothal lineup we find LarryTaylor, who last May was engaged to Jean Ryland, a Wellesley senior from Washington, D. C. Larry is now in the Army.
Caught behind the line-of-scrimmage by Jane Saunders of Lowell, Mass., and Lowell State Teachers is Clint Gaylord. Jane teaches in Wakefield, Mass., and Clint, after an OCS bout, is stationed in Long Beach, Calif. Another school teacher out-maneuvering the Navy is Joan Pendergast. Her betrothal to Ens. Neal Farrell was announced several months ago. Joan hails from Rutherford, N. J., and is a graduate of Trenton State Teachers. Neal is still aboard the USS Perry.
Freddy Alpert was nailed by the University of Miami's Lynn Besunder. Lynn lives in Newark, N. J. Skidmore's Wilma Fagin tackled Bruce Classon. Wilma is a New York City product. Bruce is in Harvard's Business Administration School.
Also on the engagement listing is Lt. PaulMackey USAF and Carol Hohenberger of Holyoke, Mass., and the U. of Mass. Last we heard, Mac was a pre-flight training in Bartow, Fla.
Unable to "punt out" at all are the recently married, headed this month by Bob Levine and Barbara Rosen. A Bennington gal, Barbara lives in Rutland, Vt., and studies occupational therapy at Columbia. Bob is being earnest with Ernst and Ernst, a New York accounting firm. Dick Franklin and Gloria Welch were wed on May 28. Both of the Franklins are Air Force Officers. They were last reported residing at Sheppard AFB.
Patricia McCaul of Lynn, Mass., has been quarterbacking for Ralph Wilson since their June 11 marriage. IBM's Charlie Morrison was on hand for the occasion. Joe Picarelli ushered as George Kingsley and Virginia Stevenson went down the aisle in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Virginia is a Skidmore grad. The Kingsleys are at Tomah, Wis., while George stands guard with the Army at Camp McCoy. Kev and Virginia Sullivan left Scott AFB, Ill.,for Limestone, Me., where Kev will continue his duties with the Air Force.
Pete Ankeny is leading interference for Margaret Payton of VTassar after their Minneapolis wedding and Tony Migliaccio was chased into marriage's "coffin corner" by Paula Mae Biagi of Falmouth, Mass., on August 6. Paula is from Colby Jr.; Tony is studying at NYU med. Back in May, Virginia Perry of Smith started calling signals for Marine Lt.Mike Biggs. The Biggs live in Hawaii, where Mike is stationed. Bob Riggio and Clift Hayes were handy as Patricia Blackwood of Colby Jr. and Wellesley Hills met Ward Gypson at the altar in New York City. On August 27 Pfc. Bill White USA was hemmed into the church by Lois Jones of Pittsburg and Smith. Herb Hillman and Ray Freud ushered. Bill is now with the Army in Germany.
Khaki Tide
There are several additions and a number of location changes in our mighty, military forward wall. After shifting out of Fort Dix, George Corbett chased down to Camp Gordon, Ga., and graduated from the Army's M.P. School. While at Fort Dix in June George Voss was named "trainee of the week," an honor which gave him a handsome bit of free liberty. George was plugging for the Northern New Jersey Oil Company before Uncle Sam caught him from behind. Henry Grebe was "soldier of the month" at Fort Riley's OCS in Kansas. Chase National Bank of New York called Henry's plays before he entered the Service.
Bob Price was reported passing through Fort Dix, and after finishing business training at Indiana U., George Haskins popped up in Rome, N. Y., as Assistant to the Adjutant at Griffith AFB.
Graduating with honors from the Army European Engineer School in Murnau, Germany, was John Parker. Also in Europe is Bill Brooks in the Army Communications Zone at LaRochelle, France. Norm Kasparson depicts glowing accounts of leadership opportunities available through the local draft board. Norm was in charge of a squad of men doing "miscellaneous" (a euphemism, believe me) jobs at Fort Dix. Over in Baltimore, JimAdams dons his cloak and dagger daily for the Army's CIC team.
Gary Zwart ran off with 2nd lieutenant's bars upon commissioning, after OCS training at Fort Benning, Ga., and Sarge Joys and NedMay pitched tent at Seneca Ordnance Depot in New York, next door to Cornell University. Suzanne and Ed Quinn are tenting at Fort Hood, Texas, while Ed spends a few years tarnishing his lieutenant's bars. Fresh out of Tuck, 2nd Lt. Dick Pearl is holding up at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.
Providing us with a respectable aerial attack is Irv Sherwood, flying with the Naval Air Cadets in Florida. Irv is now a 2nd lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Pete Geithner completed his carrier landings in the Gulf of Mexico while Skip Gale's plane-guarding destroyer kept a watchful eye. Lt. Joe Mesics is taking his passes at Whiting Field, Fla., with the Marine flyers, and Air Cadet Bill Ober completed his carrier qualifications after landing aboard the USS Saipan in the Gulf. Bill went on to Great Lakes' Correy Field.
Artie Patterson, after a tour of Naval Justice School in Newport, R. I., and a summer stay in New York City, expects to head for Europe aboard the USS Canisteo. Artie reports seeing Jack Feltman on a Newport destroyer and Dave Briggs, just out of Thayer School, also on a can in Newport.
Ens. Ky Lewis gallivanting about the Mediterranean with the Navy bumped into AlBialoski in Lisbon. Al subsequently pulled a recruiters' billet at Great Lakes, Ill. Ky checked in with Ens. John Heyn, mid-watch stander on the USS Hawkins, and Ens. RayJohnson, aboard the USS Fox. Both men are at Newport. Bill Garland, after a year of Columbia Law, is an ensign aboard the destroyer Beatty. While the USS Basilone sits peacefully in a Philadelphia dry-dock, yours truly reluctantly heads for GTMO Bay for a bit of temporary additional duty at sea.
Clipping
The class businessmen are putting up a sustained drive for pay dirt. Gib Dike is bucking the business world on the engineering staff of the Merritt, Chapman, and Scott Construction firm of Ossining, N. Y. Bill Squire made a few extra points with the Tri-County Agency of Prudential Insurance Co., as he was promoted to division manager over their Passaic, Sussex, Warren County, N. J., area.
John Schriber is shooting for a spot with the Marine football squad at Okinawa. Also on the Island is Howie Aronson. Dick Eckhard was working with the Navy football team at Pensacola, Fla. After missing a chance to qualify for the U. S. Air Force golf tourney by a single stroke, Skip Weymouth took an August weekend off and hacked up enough Illinois turf to win the Scott Air Force Base championship against, we hear, an extremely select field.
Monterey newspapers indicate that RonnieDunton is developing talents on the stage. This summer he played in the comedy melodrama Way Down East at the First Theater in Monterey, Calif.
Also in Monterey at the Army Language School are Ed Schadt (Ed's surname, incidentally, is now Scott instead of Schadt), RonDunton, Andy Guilliano, and Jerry Evans. Ed's in twelve months of Japanese; Andy, Finnish; Jerry, French. Jerry, we hear, recently tied the nuptial knot, though the details we don't have.
In your spare time sit down and flip us a line so's we'll have plenty of information next trip. Otherwise we're gonna have to sit down and make it up.
The silver pilot's wings of 2nd Lt. Julian L.Robinson '54, first Dartmouth AFROTC graduate to win them, are admired by his wifePatricia as his mother looks on. He is stationed at Reese Air Force Base, Texas.
