Thanks for the many cards and letters that I have received from classmates and wives. Please keep them coming for they are always welcome.
Don Williams writes from Keene, N.H., that his daughter Lona underwent a serious operation at the Elliot Community Hospital, and that she is recovering nicely. This is good news. I might add that Don's wife Grace is pastor-emeritus of the Surry, N.H., church, Don is deputy sheriff and clerk of the Municipal Court, and Dorace, a daughter, assists him as clerk of the Court. A very busy family.
Harold Parker's wife, Frances, says that Harold was thrilled to learn that his grandson, Robert J. Rose Jr. of Green Bay, Wis., will enter Dartmouth this fall with the class of 1964.
Tim Richards and Carlotte have returned from a three weeks' visit to their daughter Ruth's home in Greenwich, Conn. Tim has a new job as "clerk of the works" for Howe and Proutt, Architects, during the construction of the new Broadway School for the City of Pawtucket, R.I.A $600,000 project only one block from where they live, and it will take a year to build. What a lucky break.
At the annual meeting for election of officers and directors of the Brookline Chamber of Commerce, an official of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, in behalf of his organization, presented Chamber President Philip G. Bowker '23 and Executive Secretary Leon M. Holman with awards for Civic Leadership in the form of Paul Revere Medals designed for such purposes. Congratulations!
The following is from "The President's Report, Harvard University - 1958-59" regarding our classmate: "Bremer WhiddenPond, Charles Eliot Professor of Landscape Architecture, Emeritus, died September 1, 1959, in his seventy-sixth year. His association with instruction in landscape architecture went back to 1908, when he held an assistantship for a year just prior to taking the M.L.A. degree in 1911. For twenty years he occupied the Eliot Chair, named for President Eliot's distinguished son. He was a greatly loved teacher whose interest in his subject and his students went far beyond the classroom, and he was an important influence in demonstrating to his professional colleagues the interrelation of their specialty and other aspects of architecture and design." Commendable indeed.
Bishop Niles and Luna enjoyed a two weeks' vacation in the Virgin Islands, and then spent the month of February at the Gulf and Bay Club in Sarasota, Fla. Quite enchanting!
Hobba Knight and Maude write that they are enjoying their home at Ogunquit, Me. They enclosed two programs of great interest to all classmates, namely: Synopsis of the Play - "Bachelor Hall" - with the list of characters as played on Tuesday, June 25, 1907, at the Gymnasium; and the Commencement Ball with names of Patronesses, Ushers, Floor Director, and Committee, which took place on June 26, 1907 at College Hall. How many of you can remember those who took part?
Bill Smart and Harry McDevitt attended the funeral of our good friend, Benjamin Knox '08, who was born on the same day, month, and year as myself - September 19, 1884. He was a truly wonderful Dartmouth man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Our informal reunion in June will take place on June 13, 14 and 15, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, at which time '09 will join us, and we hope that '08 will also, so please make your plans now to enjoy a few days on the campus with our friends and classmates.
