Everyone reading this column will, of course, look at the detailed figures of the Alumni Fund which are given in this issue of the MAGAZINE. YOU will notice that the figure of $1843 from '94 is $186 more than last year and is higher than the two years before that. Good work, Kent Knowlton, and all who have shared with you in pushing this figure up as we all grow older.

Letters read at the Fall Round-Up from the two oldest men in the Class follow.

First, from Lovejoy:

"I'm practically a shut-in with my old-age infirmities and therefore a trip anywhere is not advisable for me. I'd certainly like to get up that way once more and see survivors of '94 men 'who have the still north in their souls and the hill winds in their breath.' Please try to drop in here at 32 Highland St. whenever you are here in New Haven."

Next, Gibbon:

"I should like awfully to be with you today, as the fragments of our beloved band once more meet to renew our various allegiances to each other, but the trip just could not be considered. A grief-stricken heart like mine would serve only to mar the joyful contact permeating the spirit of the company. . . . Six of you fellows have written me the sweetest letters ever penned by men to man. I thank you, one and all out of my heart of hearts at this grievous hour" (the death of his wife).

A later letter dated October 6 from Gibbon says: "About one half of our town was destroyed last Saturday night by fire." Apparently Gibbon's own property was not affected, although it must have an effect on his business.

At the Alumni Officers Dinner, May 7, a citation was read in honor of Sidney C. Hayward apropos of his 25 years' service as Secretary of the College. Commenting on this citation Sidney writes the Secretary:

"In addition to this term of service, I am proud of the fact that I served for four years, 1926-1930, as assistant to President Hopkins, and whatever I have been able to do, I learned from him."

Travel notes: Mrs. Victor Spooner was scheduled to return to her winter home at Winter Park, Florida, October 5. Mrs. Louise Claggett Gaines was kept away from the Fall Round-Up because she had just returned from Europe.

Woodie and Mrs. Parker have invited us to have our Matt Jones Fall Round-Up in 1957 at Portsmouth, N. H., where Woodie is part owner of a Howard Johnson Restaurant. Thank you, Woodie and Lelia. We will all be there who can possibly come.

Mrs. Penniman and her daughter, Mrs. Strong, have also given us an invitation which we hope to accept in 1958.
