Though Christmas has just passed and the New Year is still in its infancy, the Valentine displays are going up here in Worcester even before the Yuletide decorations come down. To boot, there is plenty of snow on the slopes and the Big Green, as of this writing, is undefeated and just recently won the New England Basketball Tournament with a last second score over the University of Connecticut. It must be added that several of the well-known teams of this area did not compete, though, and Doggy's boys have some tough ones ahead.

Rambling through some of the recent mail brings to light the happenings of quite a few of the group hither and yon. Two days before Christmas, Randy and Noradel Wilson got their first present of the holidays in the person of Catherine, weighing in at just a little over 7 pounds. Bome Patten writes that his abode has become a motel for traveling '52s and that Bill Thomas, Pete Taylor and Dick Brown were feted during the holidays 'neath the shadow of Ole Lookout. Dick Spurgin writes from Vienna that the Army wasn't really the joyful occupation that suited him, but that Europe did offer possibilities. Consequently, upon his discharge, this fall he moved to Austria and is presently studying at the University of Vienna "to get the European viewpoint and polish up my German." Plans now are for a return to the States sometime next fall and a continuation of his studies in International Relations at the University of Chicago. My annual note from Oregon and one Bub Richardson reveals that he is winding up his formal education in law as of this spring and plans to leave New York behind for the Coast and a practice - with the possible interruption of two years in the service. Don MacLeod writes from the Midway that he is heading for the Far East, and that New Year's was spent in Capetown, South Africa. From upper New York Lyle and Lola Spaulding write that back on May 16, David Peter was born and that G. E. still claims the service of the man of the family. In .short, no complaints whatsoever from that sector.

On the first of December, the Navy icebreaker, Atka, sailed from Boston, bound for a five-month trip to the Antarctic. Dick Dalbeck, ensign USNR, was among those aboard. Jim and Nancy Churchill write that Athens, Ga., is the next home base for them as Jim winds up his stint in Newport. Bob Jelly writes from Port Lyautey that there are better places to live, and that weekends in Tangiers and Casablanca are "different" from those at Smith and Skidmore. Bob is not alone there, however, as Stan Smiley and Quent Squires have found their orders read the same. Quent has an apartment in town with his wife, while Bob and Stan reside at the local BOQ. Apparently, Stan is still in reasonably good running form as he and Bob do considerable cross-country work - the latter in a jeep. Johnny and Jan Brower are the parents of a five-months-old daughter. Marcy and her parents can be located in the Chicago area. AI Davis notes on his Christmas card that he plans to shed "this olive drab anathema come spring.

ON THE ACADEMIC SIDE - some notes of interest: Rog Phillips, Les Geller, Joe Novak, and Bob Medvecky are all in their third year at the Harvard Law School. Bob, Rog, and Joe are all members of the Hall Club, while Les is affiliated with the Baker-Smith Equity Club. All four men competed in the Ames Competition. This is an annual affair in which the law students are organized into clubs to compete in moot court arguments.

THE MATRIMONIAL PICTURE - As for this phase of the column there seems to be no letup, which I might add is all to the good. To return briefly to Don MacLeod's notes: Jon Walton and Sis Edgeworth were married on November 27 last. Bill Randall was the best man and Jock McClintock, Dave Swain,Jim Flom, and Don were on hand as ushers. Among others in attendance were Nels Ehinger, Vic Trautwein, and Ed Finerty. The ceremony took place in Dover, Del. Sis is a Smith graduate and Jon received his M.A. from Tuck in '53. On the 12th of that same month Dick Swicker and Laura Chase tied the knot in Millington, N. J. Dick is working with the National Broadcasting Company having finished his hitch with the Army. His bride is a Mount Holyoke graduate, Class of '54. Thanks to a reporter at the Geschwind-Woodwall nuptuals I have a rather complete report of that event which took place in Sands Point, L I on December 18. Those in attendance included Pete McSpadden, Bob Binswanger,Bernie Lewis (now a j.g.), Bub Richardson,Ceb Benisch, Jack Uncles, Ted Frankenbach, and Terry Malone. Al's wife Phyllis is a Colby graduate and they are now living in Portland, Maine, where Al is the Linde Air Products sales representative for the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont area. On December 5, Bob Stockdale and Margaret Haug exchanged rings in New York. Bob and his wife make their home in Orange, N. J., and he is an engineer with Western Electric in New York City. Again on November 27, John Barclay and Robin Wrezin were married in Norwalk, Conn. Nat Parker and Terry Malone were among the ushers. John s bride attended Smith and they make their home in St. Joseph, Mo., where John is affiliated with the Wire Rope Corporation of America.

On December 18, Marcel Durot and Maureen Moher were married in Wellesley, Mass. Maureen is a Briarcliff alumna and she and Marcel are living in Long Beach, Calif., while he finishes up his tour with the Navy. The ushers included Vic Trautxvein, Ed Finerty,Jon Walton, and Johnny Brower - the last two acting in an honorary capacity. On the following day, Al Reich and Gay Ann Forsythe were married in Chappaqua, N. Y. Al wears lieutenant's bars these days and is stationed at Fort Devens in Ayer, Mass. His bride is a graduate of Wells College.

ANNUAL BOSTON ALUMNI DINNERHotel Statler, Feb. 16, 1955

On the engagement side of the picture there are four to report: Sheila Marshall and DanaEmpringham made known their intentions last November 27. Dana left the class in 1950 and his fiance is an alumna of the Merrill Business School. Bob Haycock, and Judith Jennings announced their engagement a short time ago. Bob's fiancee is a graduate of Ohio University and after graduation in '52, Bob served with the Army as a lieutenant. Sally Needles and Jim Toffey announced their engagement last November. Jim is a j.g. serving on the Destroyer Bearss; and Sally is a senior at Welle.sley where she is chief justice of Student Government. Last December 8 BillMontgomery and Susan Peyton were engaged. Bill's fiance graduated from UCLA last June and they plan a spring wedding on the Coast.

That brings me up to date on the news on hand, so I'll close out for now. By the way, "B" school grads, since the bull is running wild, where should the smart money be and for how long?

NEAR THE TOP OF THE WORLD: Bill Biddle '52, with the Fifth Army Service Group inJapan is shown on the summit of Mt. Shirouma-Yari in the Northern Japan Alps. Bill, who isSecretary of the Dartmouth Club of Tokyo, recently had an article in "Appalachia about climbing in this area.
