The month of March eased pleasantly in for us here in New England after the month of February, which produced more snow accumulation than that recorded during the entire winter last year. It's been another good winter for skiing with lots of snow and a great deal of time spent waiting in line. Yours Truly managed to sneak up for a Sunday of skiing shortly after Carnival and spent exactly as much time waiting for tows as he did skiing. It's getting harder and harder to avoid the crowds - especially on weekends. However, I will not concern you further with matters of this nature. The Executive Committee of this class will have had its first formal meeting by the time this issue of the D.A.M. hits the street. The major topic of discussion will be that of reunion a year from this spring. In the near future I hope to be able to announce the name of the Reunion Chairman. At that time, any of you who have any ideas on how that function should be run will have an opportunity to express your opinions to him. That, however, is not the only topic on the agenda. In the May issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, I hope to be able to give you a full report of just what was discussed.
On February 8, I made the annual junket to the Boston area for the Alumni Dinner there. It goes without saying that this class was well represented. If I have my records straight, the following were in attendance: Sandy Saunders, Ed Clark, Jack McCrillis, John Keniley, Bill Breed, Roy Megargel, John Bethel, Al Davis, Jack Boyle, Art Judson, Dick McDonough, George Hibben, Roy Hinds, Marcel Durot, Don Myers, Carl Stephan, and Bill Biddle. Incidentally, it was at this dinner that President Dickey, just prior to his departure to Europe, announced that the Trustees had given the architects the go ahead for the plans for the new Hopkins Center, which will be located where Bissell stands. It looks as if that project will finally get under way in the near future.
In checking into my clippings file, I note that Walt Schalick was sworn in as a New Jersey attorney at law before the New Jersey Supreme Court, at the U. S. District Court last December. Walt passed his District of Columbia Bar exam last summer and was admitted to practice there as well. He received his law degree from Harvard and was graduated from there last June. Walt is now continuing his law study at the Graduate School of Law at Columbia University.
From Fort Knox, Ky., comes word that RayLundquist was recently graduated from the Armored Replacement Training Center's Specialists Clerical School at Fort Knox. Off hand, Yours Truly would say it sounds like a courts martial job for Ray during the remainder of his stay with Uncle Sam. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School as of last June.
Going back to December again. I note that Fred John was promoted to the post of advertising manager of James Lees & Sons Company at that time. Fred has been associated with the Lees advertising department since 1953 and became assistant advertising manager last May. Fred makes his home in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Connie Carstens can be located with one of the area service units at Ft. Eustis, Va. Connie is assistant editor of the post newspaper. He entered the Army in January 1954 and completed basic training at Ft. Dix. Any of you in the Boston area who have individual or estate life insurance problems, as well as business insurance and pension and profit sharing problems, will be interested to know that Johnny Grocott has been appointed as a special agent with the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company in Boston. He will specialize in the afore-mentioned field. John, incidentally, has been discharged from the Marine Corps since 1954, having attained the rank of first lieutenant.
Troths and Betroths
It is my hope that I can clean out the backlog of engagement announcements that I have in my file. Running forward chronologically the list looks something like this. Late in December Mr. and Mrs. Bertram Saltzer announced the engagement of their daughter, Jane Lee Saltzer to Lt. (jg.) Whitey Fier. Jane is a graduate of Bennington College. BertDiker and Rhonda Barnett announced marriage intentions early this year. Bert's fiancee is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Bert received his Master's degree from Harvard B School in 1954, is currently serving with the Army and is attached to the Army Audit Agency. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Webster announced the engagement of their daughter Dudley Webster to Tom Dudley Jr. in January. Tom's wife-to-be is a student at the University of New Hampshire and Tom is a graduate of the Law School of the University of Virginia. Joan Spicer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter T. Spicer of Brockton, Mass., and Dick Pratt announced their marriage intentions in the middle of January. Joan is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and Dick recently completed a three-year tour of duty with the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. George Stavros of Concord, N. H., announced the
engagement of their daughter Bessie to DougPerthel last January. Doug recently completed a three-year tour of duty with the Armed Forces.
Again going back to the latter part of January, Ted Haskell and Sally Foss announced their engagement at a small party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Foss. Sally graduated cum laude from Middlebury College in 1955. They plan a late spring wedding. On that same day in Marblehead, Howie Smith and Patricia White announced their engagement. Patricia is a graduate of Stevens College. Incidentally both Howie and Ted are residents of Swampscott, Mass; both graduated from Vermont Academy and were fraternity brothers at Psi U.
As for the marriage situation, I have two to report as of this writing: Bob Ringstad and Diane Phillips of London and Long Beach, Calif., were married in Los Vegas on January 7. Bob is currently serving with the Navy on the West Coast. They plan to make their home in the East upon Bob's release in June. In the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., on February 11, Bill and Florence Scott exchanged vows. Bill's bride is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Bill is a graduate of the Fair School.
That winds up the news in general for this month. Just a reminder, though, that the Alumni Fund gets under way shortly. June 30 is the end of the drive, so between now and then, preferably as soon as possible, send along a check to George Hibben, Bernie Lewis, or the College.
See you in this spot in May.
