With the hottest summer on record now a thing of the past in these parts, along with the question as to who won the American League Pennant, yours truly at least concerns himself with matters pertaining to the gridiron and possibly with other matters concerned with the whereabouts of the elusive partridge. But be that as it may, there are still plenty of items to go on record concerning what's new with the Class of '52 or at least what has been new with the Class of '52 over the past several months.
Although baseball has turned over headline space to football, I note among my letters received this past summer a clipping forwarded by Jack Ferguson '15, which concerns itself with the successes of one Pete Burnside who now among other things, was burning up the Texas League with his "strike-'em-out-fastball." The Sporting News for July 27 includes a paragraph about Pete which reads as follows: "In his first full and uninterrupted season in pro ball as an ace of the Dallas Eagles, Dartmouth grad Burnside has won praise by farm director, Carl Hubbell, as the most promising pitcher in the chain of the New York Giants." Who knows, it just may be that the boys from the Polo Grounds can use him next year.
Again from the letter department, I note that one Ray Buck has joined the staff of the New Bedford Standard Times here in Massachusetts. He holds down the job of copy editor. Ray had previously spent a year on the public relations staff of Ohio Wesleyan University. He writes that he had several visits with Al Riegelman, who has since returned to Bridgeport, Conn., for more G. E. sales training. On a letter headed Commander Destroyer Division 602, Jack Collins writes that about the time this column hits the presses, he will cast aside his Navy uniform and pack up with wife Bets and son Bruce, age twenty months, for Cincinnati, where he will join forces with Procter and Gamble's advertising department. Jack goes on to say that Dort Bigg, having been duly graduated from B.U. Law School last spring, can be currently found in a law office in Nashua, N. H.
FROM THE CLIPPING FILE.... If I have my records straight, Dave Snyder was among those who received his M.D. from George Washington University last spring. He was among the 36 medical students to be initiated into the Smith-Reed-Russell Society. Dave left the class before graduation and attended Northwestern University before going to George Washington to complete his medical studies. Going way back to last May, it is reported that Dick Roraback was the principal speaker at the tenth annual Achievement Day ceremonies at Dobbs Ferry High School. Dick, having completed his service with the Navy, was reported to be working with the CitizenRegister in Ossining, N. Y. Again, going back to last spring, it is noted that Jack Fessenden joined the staff of Senator Payne, Republican, Maine, to assist with research and legislation. Again, if my records are correct, Jack is now attending the George Washington University Law School in Washington. According to the New Era weekly in Connecticut, Tom Ford graduated last spring from the Hartford Law School. Word comes from Paterson, N. J., that on June 27, a new wing of the Alps Manor Nursing Home has been named in memory of Jay Gintel. Mr. Oliver Gintel, Jay's father, announced that in memory of his son he is founding a ssoo-scholarship at the College and that the Home will make their services available without charge to any student of Dartmouth in need of such services. To those of us who remember Jay, I am sure there could be no more fitting a tribute.
TROTHS AND BETROTHS. ... Rather than mention any engagements which I know about as of this writing, I will hold them for next month. As it stands now, the information I have on those who were affianced should be out-dated as all the weddings concerned were expected to take place either this past summer or this fall. For example, on June 11, Dave Drexler and Judith Barbara Segal were married in Temple Israel in Lawrence, R. I. Judy is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and Dave is a graduate of the Yale Law School where he was a member of the Yale Law Journal and Corbey Court. Midway and expects to shed his Navy uniform sometime around November 1. So be it for this city. Let's hear from you. In the meantime, go easy on that turkey. See you all next month!
