REUNION - JUNE 14-16
The home stretch is just around the corner. Another month and you will have five behind you, - probably faster than you would like, but it's done. I can assure you, however, that there will be a certain group, a growing one I might add, that will be in Hanover on the dates mentioned above with a purpose in mind, and that, in essence, will be to celebrate Fabulous Fifty-Two's First Five. We have this so well organized at this juncture that it is hard to tell the committee, all serving without compensation save for the beer they may drink, from the waiters at Maxie's. Names of the gang handling the show run as follows: Dek Davidson is overseeing the whole weekend, I suspect under the watchful eye of Bins; Pete McSpadden is handling publicity; Jack Boyle will take your dough, so we can pay for it; Bill Breed will be the first guy you run into and he'll see that you are properly outfitted and housed as well as registered and Cliff Fitzgerald will see that you are properly received. Once you have arrived you will be wined and dined by GeorgeHibben and Sandy Saunders. Come Saturday, yours truly will see that the necessary formalities of Class business take the minimum of time at an hour which we will take careful pains to assure as reasonable. Some time prior to that, and perhaps as a continuation of the previous night's festivities, Bill Fisher will oversee a ritual to be known as the Bachelor's Breakfast. Tony Quimby is handling the details of the picnic and beer-bust Saturday p.m. and that evening Nels Ehinger will oversee the festivities while Rog Malkin handles the entertainment. Sunday, for those who can still move Gen Teevens and Chet Wiley will be holding forth bright and early with regard to the matter of milk punch. Dr. Erik Gunderson heads a competent medical committee so that anyone with delivery or other problems may rest assured that all will go well should the inevitable occur.
Ted Haskell is overseeing the musical agenda; John Rosenwald will see that you are suitably attired; Dave Edson, Frank Logan, Chuck Keenan, and Ray Buck are acting as Hanover representatives; and Johnny Grocott is in charge of all 3.2 beverages. Fran Frellick and Marsh Meyer will assist in the Sunday morning Memorial Service. So be it for a run-down on what is in store for the weekend. You all have by now received some literature on the matter of reservations and the sooner we know how many to plan on the better. We can always make the usual last minute adjustments, but let Jack Boyle know now what your plans are. He can be reached at 190 Lewis Road, Belmont, Mass.
WHAT'S NEW WITH '52
From across the pond, two cards. One comes from Al Reich who indicates that the Army is insisting that he stay around for a while longer, so reunion is out. He plans to be back in this country some time later this year, however. From Paris, Bill McAndrew says that the combination of that city and skiing in Austria is the ideal way to spend a month's leave.
From the lookouts in Hanover, I uncles stand that Dick McMahon and his wife were in the area early in March as were Mr. & Mrs. John Grocott, Bob Griswold and his bride, and John Rhodes. Also understand that Don Campbell was in town about that time.
Over in Keene, N. H., Joe Baute has been elected to the School Board. This was to be a temporary arrangement until election of the new board a couple of months ago, and while I haven't heard officially, I gather he has the job for a while. "While we are talking about this general region, Marty Cunningham gives his address as Sachem Village. He, his wife, and his son have moved to that residence while he finishes up his requirements for a degree. The Air Force has occupied Marty's time since early in 1952.
On the 23rd of last February, Dick Ellis was ordained into the Episcopal priesthood in Winchester, Mass. Dick is a recent graduate of the Berkley Divinity School in Connecticut, and if my records hold me correct he has about a year of teaching behind him at the Taft School.
Bob Barton can be located in Okinawa these days and as I have it, he has been assigned Claims Commissioner for the Ryukyu Islands area. He has a Commission with the Marines and was graduated from B.U. Law School in June of 1955.
From Bill Randall comes a letter which is long overdue as far as my reporting on it is concerned. Bill was graduated from Michigan Law School last spring, has the Wisconsin Bar Exams successfully behind him, and is now associated with the Milwaukee firm of Zimmers, Randall & Zimmers, working with his father.
WHO'S NEW WITH '52
Pardon the insertion of the heading here, but to continue on with the Randalls, wife Wendy (Smith '54) presented Bill with their first last September 30 - a girl and the name is Cindy. On January 22, Nancy Meanix presented Bob with their second, but this time it was a girl. Robert Jr. holds the fort as the oldest. Frank Cory is the father of a baby girl as of September 23 of last year, but the Army definitely wasn't cooperating on that one. Frank was in Korea when wife Dee gave birth to their daughter, Linda. Brother Chuck can be located with his wife in Germany also serving for Uncle Sam. I gather that Chuck would like to get on with his law career. More recently, on March 4, Bill and Judy Breed came around for the second time and again it was a girl. Dale Pennell bounced in at 6 pounds 11 ounces.
Before I get into the next few items here,I note that Jon Walton and wife Sis havesettled in Grosse Pointe after Jon's tour withthe Navy as a Supply Officer. He is currentlyworking on a training program at the National Bank of Detroit.
One other item: I have an interesting onefrom Fran Chisdes who informs me that he shad enough of running Korean railroadswhich occupied much of his time while hewas there, courtesy of the Army. Save for afew visits to Japan, I gather that he doesn tmiss it at all. Fran received his A.M. inLatin before the service called and is nowteaching at the Dwight Morrow High Schoolin Englewood, N. J: This summer will findhim at the School of Classical Studies, American Academy in Rome as a result of a recentscholarship award.
TROTHS AND BETROTHS
As far as the marriages are concerned, thereare quite a number but time and space limitation here requires that I hold off on thedetails until next month. The bachelor listcontinues to dwindle, however. Those recentlycommitted include Pete Taylor who withPatti Rowe announced their intentions lastJanuary. Pete's bride-to-be attended MillsCollege and received her degree from Stanford. Pete served for two years with theMarines and after their marriage in June, the Taylors will make their home in Honolulu where Pete is working with IBM. Inearly February, Jack McDonald and KathleenAnn Bergan announced their engagement.Jack's fiancee is a graduate of the Collegeof St. Rose and has done graduate work atSiena College. Jack, having served two yearsin the Marines, is now attending Albany LawSchool. Al Stein and Pat Broderick announced their engagement recently. Al served with the Armed forces in Europe, and they plan a June wedding. From Maplewood. N. J., comes word that Dan Van Dorn and Julie Paddock plan nuptials this summer. Dan's wife-to-be graduated from Bradford Junior College and Wheelock College.
He served with the Field Artillery in Germany and is currently associated with the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company of Jersey City. Early in March, George Hibben and Julia Kimball announced their engagement. Julie is to be graduated from Smith this June and they plan a summer wedding. Hib is finishing up at the "B" School and expects to be working in the New England Area. George Sherman and Anne Woodberry announced their marriage intentions recently. Anne is a graduate of Skidmore and George received degrees from both Columbia and Oxford. He is currently the East European correspondent for the London Observer.
That winds it up for the moment. Yours truly writes his swan song next month and save possibly for the post reunion article, you'll be reading from a new pen come fall. See you in June.
