SAN FRANCISCO'S ANNUAL CHRISTMAS DINNER honoring undergraduates home for the holidays was held on December 28 at Veneto's. A good turnout of 75 included five prospective students with three fathers and six undergraduates.
The evening started with an enjoyable cocktail hour during which everyone had a good chance to talk over old times and fully appreciate how many new faces have come into the fold. Dave Smith '35 found hearty response from everyone as he led the group in singing some of the old songs. After a typical long and delicious dinner, prepared by one of San Francisco's finest, President Tavey Taylor '28 piloted a short meeting during which Dan Varty '58 related some of his more humorous experiences during his first week in Hanover. In addition, for the benefit of the guests, Jim Mickle '55 described some of the outstanding courses currently offered, which clearly showed why Dartmouth is "great" in the liberal arts field. Based upon these two enthusiastic talks given without even a reference to the "cuff" makes us proud of all our undergraduates. As one of our alumni said, "I never could have done that when I was in College."

The WEST COAST VISIT OF DON MCKINLAY '37 from Denver, chairman of the Alumni Council's national enrollment committee, brought together a group of some 25 alumni for dinner in San Francisco, December 2.
The primary purpose of Don's visit was to discuss and analyze our committee's work and describe the program that has been used so successfully in Denver. All of us felt that his visit was one of the most valuable projects undertaken by the College and we thank our Alumni Councilor Guy Wallick '21 for his assistance in arranging for it. Don had a very complete answer for every conceivable question put to him, and did an outstanding job of presenting the "ideal enrollment program."
The most significant part of the valuable information gained from our meeting was learning the many mistakes we have been making in our approach. Many of these mistakes will be corrected immediately; others will be corrected over a long-run period. We found that we have been serving as a general source of information for all boys in high schools and prep schools, rather than concentrating our efforts on the boys who would make the best Dartmouth men. We have not been following up enough on the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in the prep schools, but instead have been dealing with each year's crop of seniors as they come to us. Although we have been aware of our mistakes and have been working on improvement, we really had our eyes opened to many other aspects of enrollment work during our meeting with Don.
