The Dartmouth Club of Washington made the front page of the Washington Post andTimes Herald on February 2 when ShermanAdams' talk to the Club was reported. More than 150 people attended the luncheon meeting at the Washington Hotel to hear President Eisenhower's Assistant speak. Edward F. Ryan '37 was the staff reporter on the Washington newspaper who wrote the story quoted, in part, as follows:
Sherman Adams, Assistant to President Eisenhower, gave a vigorous boost for freedom of Government information.
Adams told a luncheon meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Washington that the President en- courages him to answer frankly questions that do not Involve security matters Adams told the group, "The Boss says to me over and over again, 'When vou are questioned about a problem that doesn't involve a matter of security, answer the question as best you can.'"
Adams drew a laugh as he opened his speech with an anecdote about "my friend, Estes Kefauver." He recalled that Senator Kefauver (D-Tenn.) made a strong bid for votes m New Hampshire in the Democratic presidential preference pri- mary there in 1952.
After Kefauver ran up a heavy vote, Adams said (hat Gov Gordon Browning of Tennessee commented to him, "Estes had pretty good luck, and it kind of surprised him." To illustrate the surprise, Adams recalled Browning told this story:
"A woodpecker from Tennessee flew out to California and started to work on one of the giant redwood trees. Suddenly a coastal thunderstorm came up and a huge bolt of lightning split the tree from top to bottom. The woodpecker surveyed the damage then said with some pride, A fellow don't know his own strength till he gets away from home."
During the course of the Club meeting, the nomination of the Hon. Clarence Opper '18, Judge of the Tax Court of the United States, was approved for Alumni Councillor, succeeding Percy H. Russell Jr. '29, whose second term is expiring.
