Early in April, the Territory of Hawaii will dedicate its new Pier 2 Building, the largest structure yet to be erected on the Islands. This building covers 8½ acres of land; is 1200 feet long and is high and wide enough to preserve a symmetry of outline. This magnificent three-million-dollar structure was designed by architect Rog Benezet, who lives with wife Mary and three children at 4705 Kahala Ave., Honolulu. This city is growing so rapidly that it has let contracts for eleven schools to be built'simultaneously. The largest of these, the Kaneohe School, has also been awarded to Roger. Congratulations to you, Rog, on your success and contribution in building up our largest Pacific outpost! Please keep in touch.
Leonard Salit is general merchandise and advertising manager of the Parisian in Birmingham, Ala., since 1941. The store carries a complete line of men's, women's and children's apparel and was recently written up in a New York newspaper under the heading "Merchandising Policy Shift Hikes Profits at the Parisian." With a volume of 4½ million in 1953 and 5 million in 1954, the store had a 6% profit before taxes, while the average for stores of this size and type is 2.2%. Much of the credit for the increasing volume and attractive profit picture is given to Leonard, who came up with the new advertising and merchandising policy that paid off. Would that the coarse paper business in the New York area could show 2.2% profit - let alone 6%! Praises be to Birmingham and the Parisian!

A letter from Chuck Adkins, Director of Public Relations at Colgate U., mentions that Dartmouth opens its 1955 football season, under its new coach, Bob Blackman, playing Colgate. The welcome mat will be out at 52 Maple Ave., Hamilton, N. Y., that weekend for all classmates attending the game. Chuck adds that the only classmate he has seen recently has been Jay Whitehair, whose son is one of the flashiest fullbacks Colgate has ever had and he certainly caused the Big Green no end of trouble last fall.

I was pleased to receive a letter from DickMerrill, which I quote:
"After a complete silence for 23 years, and carrying your card around for weeks, I have finally broken down. I spent some nine years in department store merchandising and acquired all the occupational diseases common to the field. In 1944 I decided (with the urging of my doctors and wife) that it just was not worth it. So, with the call of the New Hampshire hills still within me, I pulled up all my roots and moved to our summer home in Greenfield. That year I built a frozen food locker plant in Peterborough in partnership with a local man. In 1951 we sold part of our business and joined with a large and well-established dairy and ice cream company operated by a former partner of mine. I became treasurer of the new company and we are now trying to enlarge a group of roadside operations on a franchise basis under the name of "Hayward Farms." We have some seventeen units, mostly in New Hampshire, although we are getting some in Massachusetts. This New Hampshire life is really 'it' and I must say I don't miss the excessive pressure of the rag business. A half-dozen times a year my wife and I peerade to Hanover and never miss a home game in the fall. To all the overworked and overpressured brethren, I heartily recommend the treatment!"
Thanks, Dick, for finally getting in touch again. Good luck to you and Hayward Farms!

From a Dobbs Ferry, N. Y., newspaper, a headline reads: "Scion of the Senecas a Dobbs Ferry Teacher." The article continues: "In pre-Revolutionary War days, the Seneca Indians went on a rampage in upper New York and captured a white girl settler named Mary Jamison. She refused to return to her people and married into the Seneca tribe. Today one of her descendants, Roland B. Sundown, an English teacher, is tutoring at St. Christopher's School." The article goes on to state that Roland's first job after graduation was that of an English teacher with the Indian Service in Alaska. This was followed by other teaching positions in New Jersey and Connecticut and in Indian Service Schools in Oklahoma and North Dakota. During the war he served with Army Counter-intelligence. It is good to hear of Roland's activities again and our thanks go to Johnny Couzens for spotting the article and sending it along.
The response to the cards sent out by your secretary has been most gratifying — so far I have received about 275 replies and about fifteen fellows have written me letters. All of these cannot be included in one month's column, however, and will be used in the May issue. This kind of cooperation makes this job seem worthwhile and the long hours of work became really enjoyable. Thanks to all of you who have returned your cards, and to those of you who have not - get on the ball! '
