55 A three-week cruise to Antarctica over the Christmas holidays gave EricBergstrom and his wife, Nancy, a chance to experi ence that unrivaled and unique part of our world. And it turns out that the bright young cruise director on the WorldDiscoverer was a Dartmouth graduate, Heidi Turer '90. This led to a series of conversations of life at the College. One of the numerous Zodiac trips ashore was to visit the deserted historic whaling station at Grytviken, South Georgia Island. This is where Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried, and, as is the custom, the Bergstroms and Heidi participated in a toast to this legendary hero at his gravesite. Eric reports that he and Nancy have bought a 160-acre homestead near their present ranch in the Huachuca Mountains near Elgin, Ariz. After a year of paperwork, bringing in power to their remote location, planning, and building they are nearing the completion of their new ranch home. Their address and phone will remain the same, except for the area code, which is now 520.

It is refreshing to find that the recent controversy in Hanover was not Dartmouth related but concerned the proposed replacement of the Ledyard Bridge over the Connecticut River, connecting Hanover and Norwich. It seems that the New Hampshire highway officials had a design which included two traffic lanes, two bicycle lanes, and two sidewalks and provided for the widening of West Wheelock Street to a similar configuration. A veritable freeway to Norwich, some thought. Needless to say there were two sides to the issue, with the opponents organized as the "Friends of the Ledyard Bridge." The groups reached a compromise, and the plans have been scaled down.

Children play a big part in the lives of Dickand Joanne Targetx. Not only do they have eight children of their own ranging in age from nine to 40, but they have opened their home to more than 100 foster children over the years. The Targett family members include both Ph.D. and master's-degree candidates, one a Dartmouth '84, and they are pursuing varied careers such as nursing, investments, special education, tree surgery, and advertising. Dick himself has been with Aetna since college, worked in the medical malpractice field, and is currently a litigation consultant handling all Connecticut litigation from their Hartford office. He is beginning to think about retiring after 38 years, finding that the one-hour commute from Danbury is a bit of a grind, particularly in the evening. Dick sees Jim Venman on occasion, and he and . Joanne hope to join us at the reunion in june.

Ralph Sautter recently informed me that another classmate, Carlos B. Ellis, passed away last July. Carlos was with the class for freshman year. He is survived by his wife, Mary.

There is still time to sign on for our 40th in June. It promises to be a great event for those attending. And don't forget to join in the class reunion gift to the Alumni Fund. See you in Hanover.
