Southern California alumni held their annual dinner on March 10 in the Los Angeles Room of the Statler Hotel. Toastmaster for the evening was the inimitable Jack Rourke '40, of radio, television and cinema fame. Honored guests were Prof. Herb West 22, currently doing research in Southern California, and trustee Charlie Zimmerman '23, visiting from Hartford, Conn. In spite of the fact that a rare California fog overhung the Los Angeles area, necessitating the use of windshield wipers, the banquet room was packed with over seventy alumni. Harry Lill '05 represented the earliest class present, and he is looking forward this summer to attending his 50th reunion. Alumni Counselor LeonRothschild '24 reported on the activities of the local enrollment and interviewing committees and stated that applications for the Class of 1959 have reached an all-time high for this area. A Western Area regional conference is planned for this year in San Francisco. John Lyman '28 announced the formation of a Southern California Scholarship to be used to aid one boy from this vicinity. Plans call for an initial fund of $700 which will be applied to the cost of the boy's first year and the subscriptions will be on an entirely voluntary basis. John hopes to be able to have an entrant for the fail semester and with the enthusiastic reception given the plan upon first notice, it definitely should prove a success. The boy will be a Southern Californian and every Southern California alumni should make a point of showing personal interest by sending a pledge to John Lyman.
Our speakers, Professor West and Charlie Zimmerman, left everyone present feeling the College is in good hands. Herb told of the work of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library and it was apparent that he has worked unstintingly on this project since its inception. Charlie Zimmerman imparted the knowledge that the Trustees are firmly behind the administration just as the administration is firmly behind the faculty. His main point was. that as far as he was concerned, the undergraduate body was showing improvement every year. No one in Hanover is standing still on laurels previously gained, any more than alumni throughout the country are failing to fulfill their eternal obligations to Dartmouth.
