After being thoroughly convinced that Frank Clement is a shoe-in for the Presidency in 2,000 and hearing the tale of the two old gals (delegates, no less) in the lobby of the Mark Hopkins, one of whom asked the other, "Is this fellow Ike any relation to Dwight Eisenhower?" I glanced at my calendar and gasped - soooo off to press we go. I thought to myself during the convention that I just didn't fit the picture of the prosperous American. If you're like I, you're riding the crest of the biggest tidal wave of bills, dunning notices, installment payments, children, boats, clothes, etc., that our short lives have known, but having a good time doing it.

At any rate, here's hoping you've had a fine summer, and how about sending us a picture of it. (Just be sure a '51 is in it.) We've had our hat oft all summer to GaryMansur and his tribe of fund raisers, but this is the first time we've been able to blow his horn. Congratulations for a fine job to everyone. Next year, let's not be satisfied with a second place in the Little Green Derby though coming from where we were to where we wound up was a herculean feat in itself, and everyone should be happy.

News has been piling up all summer and the bucket is ready to burst, so let's dive in. The McFarland wedding, which you can see for yourself was a howling success, found Dick marrying Joyce Howard of Minneapolis. Joyce is a '55 graduate of Mt. Holyoke, and after a week or two at Banff, they will reside in this fair city. Pete Bogardus and TedEberle showed up for ushering duties and believe me, when Bogy shows up, he really shows — he had a fresh, new valise of tricks and the only thing missing was Al Karcher, who was reportedly coming, but his hand apparently hadn't healed from another encounter of this same sort of thing. We could go on forever, but we'll just have to let your imagination do the filling in.

Let's stay up here in the north country for awhile and tell you all of the announcement of Bob Meyer's engagement to Petrea Rahr. Bob is quartered here with St. Regis Paper, and Petie, the old dear, is the sister of our Guido Rahr from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, She has just returned from a year's study abroad, and after viewing these starry-eyeds in action, I'm surprised they touched ground long enough to pick a day in October for the wedding. Congrats. Speaking of this sort of thing, Fred Lord and Elenor Young of West Hartford, Conn., announced their engagement in May. It should be a united couple soon, since a fall wedding is planned. Elenor has an admirable record behind her in graduating from Vassar, and the School of International Affairs at Columbia, and she is now on the staff of the monthly economic survey of the Guarantee Trust Co. Fred hasn't done badly himself in graduating from the Harvard "B" School, and is now with John & Higgins Insurance Co. in New York City.

There was a goodly number of fellow '51ers aspiring toward the goal of marriage during this past summer. The following have succeeded in getting the initial "'I will" from one of the fair sex- Joe Spound and Paula Lewis announced their engagement in June. Paula hails from Worcester and is a member of the class of 1957 at Simmons College. We hear that John Higley and Jane Gray of Millbury, Mass., have become engaged, and as we might have told you, are both with the State Mutual Life Insurance Co. It looks as if the nuptial knot will be tied in the spring of '57. Another brave and bold conquistador from New England is Chuck Fitzsimmons who announced his engagement to Carol Gennette. Since the wedding is planned for September 22, it will probably be Mr. and Mrs. by the time we hit the street.

Another couple engaged recently, and who have chosen September 22 for their wedding, are Jean Smith and Harold Stahmer. Jean graduated from Vassar in 1953 and the Harvard School of Education in 1954, and hails from Boston. Harold graduated from the Union Theological Seminary in '55, was ordained in the ministry of the Episcopal Church in New York, and is now studying for his doctorate in theology at Cambridge, England. Dr. John Brennan got his lovely lady-to-be in the form of Sharon Brockway of Grand Rapids, Mich. The engagement was announced early this summer, and we believe the wedding was on June 23. Sharon is a registered nurse, having attended Georgetown School of Nursing, where John studied medicine. He is now working at his internship at Boston City Hospital. Our hats are off to Joe Lux and Gertrude Buerkle, who were engaged this summer and plan to be married in the fall. We don't know what Joe is doing now, but his wife-to-be is a graduate of the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene.

Al Brout has himself a very talented gal in the person of Joan Johnson, who is assistant to the treasurer of Group Attitudes Corp. of New York. Al has his law degree from Columbia and is now with Henry Brout & Co. of N.Y.C. This was another September wedding. Congratulations, one and all!

The '51 family grew a little bit over the hot summer. One addition came in the form of a 7-pound girl on June 1, by the name of Janet Sickler. Parke and Bernie, who are stationed in Sacramento with Campbell's Soups, are the proud parents. Jim and Nina Fredericks added a daughter back on April 30, which rounds out their family at three — two girls and a boy. Our information has it that Jim is still with Bell Telephone in New York, and doing very well since his graduation from Thayer School.

It was wonderful to hear from one of our fellow '51ers across the seas in the person of Marc Heifer. After four years with the Navy, Marc was released last fall in London, and is working there for his Doctor's. Between working in the British Museum, and doing some instructing in mountaineering in the Alps, Marc has found himself the girl of his choice, a bonny lass by the name of Inez Caig. Anyone in the British Isles was invited to the wedding at Castle Douglas near Dumfries. Inez is a Scots Latin teacher, into which profession Marc hopes to go, either in the states or in home-town London on completion of his studies. For any of you who might be confused at the above monicker, let me clear the matter by saying that Marc changed his first name from his former "Sturdy" a year or so ago.

We are awfully happy to hear that John South worth pulled into Hanover in June from Lafayette, Indiana. "Old Faithful" himself, David Angell will be residing in Randolph, Vermont, after spending the summer in Yellowstone Park as a park physician. Prior to this Dave had been interning in San Francisco.

Dave Hilton has joined the Jamison & Phelps Agency of the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Agency in Chicago. From the job he did for us as head agent, there isn't any doubt but what he will run up the life insurance selling field. And speaking of that, heartiest congratulations are in store for Henry Moyer, who has completed the requirements as a member of the million-dollar round table of the National Association of Life Underwriters.

That about sums up the premiere attraction of the year. Let's hear from you and don't forget to save some vacation time for reunion about the third week in June 1957. More dope on that later.
