Happy Hallowe'en to you from us folks down here in Charlotte, N. C. And believe it or not, we're getting quite a '51 colony here in Charlotte - there are three of us now.
Bob and Jackie Lyon, with youngsters Kenny, Linda and Lee Ann landed here during the summer, transferred by Esso from Manhattan. Bob's in advertising here, in Esso's central office for the two Carolinas.
I had hardly gotten over the shock of having a classmate within talking distance before it turned out that Bob Kidd is also here, a captain of industry with Dupont. Bob came up after a tour with that outfit in their fabrics plant down in Kinston, N. C., and he plies his trade here by making sure the administrative threads don't get too tangled.
A letter from Haviland Smith tells of another Charlotte connection that I had already suspected but passed off as too coincidental to be true. There's a rather well-known photography-hi fi shop here under the name of Haviland Smith, and it turns out that's Smitty's father, and that practically all his relatives are here. Smitty and Martha are now in Washington where he's a civilian political analyst for the Department of the Army. Haviland tells of running into Navyman Marc Heifer back when in school in London, and hears that Marc is now a civilian, married and studying at the U. of London.
Ben Sykes always was a front runner, and now he's done it again. Coming back from Navy duty in the Far East last spring, Lt. Sykes and wife Terry boarded the luxury liner "SS President Wilson" and headed for his next duty in Newport, R. I. Ben brought with him one of the first cases of that pesky Asian flu, having it in June. Really Ben, it didn't get fashionable until this fall. But anyway, Lt. Sykes ran into Drs. Al Holt and Tyke Miller at the Naval Hospital there in Newport - Ben's now teaching at the school of Naval Justice there.
And while we're on the subject o£ Navy, a new address that floated by indicates that one of our class is an officer in submarines - first '51 I've heard of on the pigboats. He's Lt. Roland Swain, now on the "USS Menhaden" (55377) in the Pacific Fleet.
There's at least one '51 engagement current but as yet unheralded here. Word from the Washington area has it that Bette-Barron Smith of Potomac, Maryland is the intended of Pete Stamats.
And we've got plenty of scoop on weddings, some of it a bit tardy, due to the summer layoff, but all of it welcome. First off, you all undoubtedly noticed the happy picture in last month's MAGAZINE of the '51 gathering at Len Smith's home in Santa Clara, Calif. Right in the middle of that joyous group were Earl Brabb and Gisela Reichel, and we're happy to announce that they became man and wife in Grosse Pointe, Mich., on Sept. 14.
We also hear that Bayard Johnson and Smith grad Janet Stallings Henderson were wed last May, and now live in Boston, with Bayard representing Columbia Records in Eastern Massachusetts. Just about that same time, Charlie Benson and Carole Ann Grant were married in Cheshire, Conn. And in another spring wedding, Jane Gray said yes to John Higley in Millbury, Mass. Understand they're now living in Worcester, where John's with State Mutual Life Assurance Co.
Also better a bit late than never on another May wedding, Don Herdeg to Esther Simon in Wilmington, Del., with Parke Sickler doing honors as best man. Esther attended the University of Delaware, and we understand that Don's been newly appointed a military products sales specialist with General Electric in Schenectady, where they'll live.
Trotting along the matrimonial path, we find that in August Dr. (and Lt.) Jim Thorpen married Ellen Jean Adie of New Rochelle. Ellen's a graduate of Greenbrier Junior College and the U. of Rochester School of Nursing. After a hitch as asst. medical officer on the mammoth flattop "USS Coral Sea," Jim was at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va., but expected to be released shortly to take up a residency in pathology at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver, Colo.
Just about the same time, Jim Saurman and Ann Elizabeth Morgan said their "I do's" in Winter Park, Fla. Ann's an alumnus of the University of Florida and Katherine Gibbs School in New York, and Jim's now with Old Republic Life Insurance Company of Chicago.
In another summer ceremony, old Schusboomer Al Blomquist passed a wedding band to Carol Lee Plank in Denver, Colo., where Al's trying to untangle things as a city planner. Carol attended the University of Denver and is a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.
It was something of an international affair when Bob Leavitt married Rosemary Dickerson in Concord, N. H. Guests included visitors from Lebanon, South Africa, England, Canada and California. Rosemary graduated from Homerton College in Cambridge, England, and also attended Keene Teachers College and the University of New Hampshire. They'll live in New York, where Bob's working for Riordon Sales Corp. Ltd., and holding the '51 Alumni together. Alex Sarjeant was on hand to usher at their nuptials.
And speaking of sergeants, three of them have checked in, all of the non-military variety and all of them spelled differently. Alex Sarjeant reports that besides giving the Leavitts a royal sendoff, he's settled comfortably in Levittown, N. Y. with Joan and four little corporals, ages three to 10. Alex is New England representative for Pelton & Crane, which now has general offices here in Charlotte.
John Sargeant writes that his harem is keeping him busy — besides Muriel there's Anne, 5, Catherine, 3, and Linda, 9 mos. When not pinning diapers, John covers Long Island, New York City and Westchester as casualty special agent for the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Co. Home is currently in Freeport, N. Y.
And Dave Sargent pipes up from Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., where he's in sales with Scott Paper Co. for the Detroit area. Dave graduated from Harvard Business School in June '56. In the family line there's Steven, four, with a second addition expected to be on the scene by now.
Dave's run into lots of other '51's in the Detroit area. He mentions Rick Austin (2 youngsters) in Birmingham, Mich., a sales analyst for Ford, and Lloyd Richardson, living at home in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and working for Mt. Clemens Metal Products Co. Dave also reports that Ed Isbey is still in his residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital and that Bill Hosier (still single) is with the Michigan Bank in Detroit. Pete Cummings, also single, is with Gerber Baby Foods in Detroit, while Dave's heard through the grapevine that Dave Saxton is one of those prosperous stock brokers in New York.
It seems that Dave Hilton practically burned up the insurance business his first year in it. At Northwestern Mutual's 100 th anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, Dave came in for special recognition as the firm's leading first year man in the nation-with $600,000 in policy sales the first year. Dave's with a Chicago agency, in case you've forgotten.
Another step up the ladder was made by Calvin Groves recently, after 4½ years with American Airlines. Cal goes to Boston as a sales representative after a tour with the airline in Rochester, N. Y.
Hap Salisbury is still an account sales representative with IBM in St. Louis, but writes that he has a new address. He, Janet and little Linda are now at 401 Edgewood Drive, Clayton, Mo. And Justin Smith writes from Woodbury, Conn., that he's now in a management trainee program with Seymour Smith and Son Inc. in Oakville, Conn.
Well, there's a bit more material here, but space dictates that it wait for next month, when we'll be sure to get it in. Let me hear from the rest of you.
