The big Thanksgiving turkey has come and gone and a white and merry Christmas rapidly approaches. May it be a happy one and joyous one for all of the '51s and their families wherever you may be!
It will be a white Christmas, no doubt, for Ferguson Thiel in the little town of Strasbourg, France, where he has been admitted to the law school of Strasbourg University. Fergie was released from two years of Army duty on October 6. It is happy news that Fred Ranney has just returned from fourteen months in Korea with the 7th Infantry. As you might have heard, Cpl. Fred was married on June 24 to Elizabeth Blue of Princeton, N. J. Although she didn't attend Princeton, she did attend the University of Vermont. It's good news that Fred is home safe and sound, and although he is still in the Army, at Camp Gordon to be exact, we are sure the wife is very happy to have him home in their little apartment in Augusta, Ga.
Ted Guynan, who followed every sport known to man in college, has followed the vocation of his greatest interest, sports. Ted is with the Own Sporting Good Store, in his home town of Plymouth, N.H. Also recently back from Korea is Cpl. Joe Sisson, who has been there as a cryptographic technician since April of '52. We are very pleased to hear that he has been awarded the Commendation Medal. We just can't seem to keep away from the servicemen as we report that Don Rider was awarded his wings and Air Force gold bars last spring. Anybody that wants to talk about speed should see Don he's piloting jet fighters, and at last reports, was in combat training at Phoenix, Ariz.
If any of you haven't seen enough Life Insurance men recently, you can call on MelWalsh, who at last reports from the underground, was a cashier for the H. H. Holt General Agency of the Aetna Life, with offices at Des Moines, la. Mel's main study is in estate control, group insurance, and applications of Social Security. We certainly hope that Bill Hosier doesn't have to use the knowledge gained in the chemical warfare school in Japan. Bill completed the course last spring, and has been overseas since last March.
Walking down the hall of advanced learning last week, we ran into Ken Little and Merle Thorpe who with fourteen other classmates last spring were awarded their engineering degrees at Thayer. A nice note just in from Ed Isbey all covered with Proudness, reports of the happy arrival of a girl on September 23. Roxane is doing fine and the new bundle of dynamite, also named Roxane, keeps Ed running with the bottle and diapers. Ed, as most of you know, I'm sure, is in his third year of Med. School at Wayne University in Detroit. He reports that Dick Dutton and Jack Geigerrich dropped him letters recounting their startling activities on the European scene. It's great news to hear that Whitey Hand was recently awarded the combat infantrymen badge for his participation in ground action with the 5th Regiment combat team in Korea. Most of you know that Whitey is a 2nd Lieut. That ablest sleuth of them all, Bob Leavitt reports that Howie Glickstein was seen in Montreal before sailing for a summer session at Oxford. Also in Montreal are Jessie Schoenbrod and Dave Angell Lattending Mcgill Med. school. It was great news to hear that Mr. and Mrs. Stu Paley were fortunate enough to be in Hanover in late September the beautiful fall colors must certainly have been magnificent. October 3 saw the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. George Bissell in Hanover.
We're sorry that we cannot pay tribute this month to all you many 51ers who finally got your gals to say "I do," but the listing of the contributors to the Alumni Fund is a visual tribute to the splendid job done by DaveHilton and his host of helpers. The fewer news items we transmit in December each year, the more space goes to listing the names of the generous.
To all of you and your families wherever you may be, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, one and all!
