Since our last report in June, Philadelphia alumni have had a full summer of Dartmouth activities.
The weather could not have been better for the Club's Annual Picnic at the Valley Forge Farm of Jim Tindle '36, on Saturday, June 23. About 200 alumni, undergraduates, wives, dates, and children were on hand for a relaxing afternoon of swimming, Softball, sunbathing, throwing "flying saucers" and refreshments. Jim's gracious hospitality has enabled us to hold the picnic in a private and most pleasant setting for several years now and has made it our biggest event of the year.
Our Interclub League Softball team had its best season ever. They tied with the Philadelphia Cricket Club for top spot, then lost, 4-3, in two extra innings in the play-off. Charlie Curtis '52 pitched a two-hitter going into the 6th inning. Three of the regulars were not in the line-up for the play-off because away on vacation. Having done as well this past season, with a little bit more support from athletically inclined alumni, particularly from the younger classes, we should be able to come out on top next year.
Fifteen "duffers" turned out for a "Divot Diggers Outing" at Rolling Green Golf Club on September 7. In the scoring, Bill Dow '51 had the low gross, while Bill Pugh '25 had the low net. Dinner followed the tour of the links. Program Chairman Al Gschwind '52 was handicapper, and Club President Tom Bryant '18 was host member.
On September 11, 37 incoming freshmen, their fathers, and alumni gathered at the Dartmouth-Princeton Club for dinner and to cement Philadelphia-Dartmouth relationships with the class of '60. Clark Bryant '57 gave a talk on present-day undergraduate life at the College. Two excellent color films —the new "Dartmouth Visited" and "Dartmouth Outdoors" - were shown.
