Dave Wiggins sends along a nice message, saying that he is enjoying reading these class notes now that he no longer has to write them. Rog Shannon writes of his moving from Spokane to Rockville, Md.: "Finally moved back home to the East to take a combined job as Chief of Radiology at the D.C. V.A. Medical Center and an appointment to George Washington University Medical School." He goes on to say that he and his wife, Maggie (Wellesley '61), have six children between them, with a niece and a nephew graduating from Dartmouth this spring. With spring-like anticipation, Rog says, "I will miss the Alumni College in the Northwest but look forward to the Hanover version." Dave and Ginny Hilton send us a "Scrapbook of Memories" comb ination Christmas card and recent biography with pictures of the doings of the Hilton family during the past year, beginning with a trip to Africa to spend Christmas '85 with their daughter Linda, who was in the Peace Corps, a trip which included ballooning above the Serengeti. The Hiltons also note with pride that their daughter Laura is a sophomore at the University of Denver and that both father Dave and son Dave spoke at the Northwester Mutual annual convention in July. Marc Heifer writes from Dorset, England: "Attended a Dartmouth Club of London party at the Surrey stately home (Ridge Green Hall) of Gus Aberle '55, where there were 90-odd grads, undergrads, and spouses. Expected to see Frank Smallwood, who's at Oxford this year, and did. He's in fine form. We were amazed to see Abdul Sheikh, with his lovely wife and small daughter. He has moved from Nairobi and is in property in London. All's well in Dorset and in semiretirement. Not many 'sls stop despite our being in the B & B business." Marc ends with an inviting question: "When are you coming back?" which refers to two summers (1964, 1974) when I had the rare pleaure of staying with Marc and Rachel in their ancient Dorset farmhouse. Marc, who grew up way up in upper New York State, has become, after long years of residence and married life in England, a thoroughly anglicized antiquarian who can show any visitor all that's worth knowing about Thomas Hardy's "Wessex." Let me give you his new address, should you be thinking about traveling there: 19 Institute Road, Swanage, Dorset, BH 19 1 BU.
Russ Dilks tells us that after the Pennsylvania game last fall he saw FredBrown, Buck Scott and Jack Woods at the Dartmouth Club of Central N.J. in Princeton. John Greenwood sends an article from the Chronical of Higher Education about Loye Miller intriguingly entitled "Veteran Reporter Helped Change Secretary's Image." The secretary is William J. Bennett, U.S. Department of Education, a man whose image Loye is credited with transforming "from enfant terrible to the darling of the news media." Before his Bennett stint, Loye worked as a reporter for 30 years, 22 of them in Washington covering politics for Time, Gannett, the Chicago Sun-Times and Newhouse. The article points out that Loye has his own image: "well known among Washington journalists, he fits the stereotype: a straight-talking man with disheveled appearance." Dick Halloran is another who has long experience in journalism and who is in the news: he has written a wellrecieved book entitled To Arm a Nation:Rebuilding America's Endangered Defenses, published by Macmillan last November. Dick has worked for the New York Times since 1969 as a diplomatic, energy, and defense correspondent, investigative reporter, and Tokyo bureau chief. Prior to these posts, he was with the WashingtonPost and Business Week. He resides in D.C. with his wife and fellow writer Fumiko. And finally, Hank Sanders reports as our class representative to the Alumni Council, a body consisting of 93 members which meets every six months in Hanover. Hank writes, "I am pleased to be on the Committee on Regional Organization and the Committee on Communications," and notes that he welcomes input from classmates. A significant part of the busy meeting he attended in December was the unanimous approval of Mike Heyman for a second five-year term on the College's Board of Trustees.
