The absence of a Philadelphia column from these pages in the last few issues does not mean either that your Philadelphia Club or its Secretary has gone out of business. Although our special monthly luncheons with a speaker were discontinued because of poor attendance, the weekly informal Monday luncheons continue and generally with a good turnout.

Much has been going on behind the scenes. Our enrollment work, which has succeeded in sending many top-flight boys from the Philadelphia area to Dartmouth in the past, has been greatly strengthened and the number of active workers considerably increased so that we are almost at the point of complete coverage of schools in our enrollment district. This task is headed up by Dr. John Wolf '27M (VI 4-0600), National Enrollment Chairman; Stew Young '50 (MO 4-3912), Local Enrollment Chairman; and chief recruiter Jim Tindle '36 (NI 4-0960), Enrollment Advisory Committee Chairman. There is always room for more enrollment workers and interviewers, and a call to Dr. Wolf will start the wheels turning.

President Dick Lippman '42 (with his inside track on the printing business) has been responsible for the publication of our first Club Newsletter, which was sent to all alumni and undergraduates in the area. Dick is also hard at work in putting together a new Directory of Alumni and Undergraduates from this area. The publication date has not yet been set because the editor's task is like that of Sisyphus - just when you think you have finished, you find some new people have arrived in the area, others have moved out, and still others have moved within the area.

Professor John Turkevich '28, who teaches Chemistry at Princeton, spoke at our Annual Dutch-Treat luncheon for undergraduates, their fathers, and alumni on December 29. Forty-two men, in addition to the Professor's charming wife, heard him discuss our relations with the Soviet Union. Professor Turkevich is fluent in Russian, has had many professional contacts with Russians while representing the United States at meetings and conferences, and last summer served as Scientific Attache at the United States Embassy in Moscow.

By the time you read these words, our Annual Dinner will also be a matter of history. Unfortunately the date, Friday evening, January 13, comes after the copy deadline for this issue of the MAGAZINE. We hope you were on hand with your wife or date to hear Coach Bob Blackman, to enjoy an excellent meal and drinks with Dartmouth friends, and for dancing. We'll give a full report next month after we find out just how many were among the fortunate attenders.

Tack Cowan '40, president of the DartmouthClub of Western New York, and Red Rolfe'31 chat prior to a club meeting in Buffalo.
