Some people just don't seem to get the breaks — for instance your Class Secretary right at the moment. Here I've been knocking myself out to gather in news, and for once I have a whole magazine-full. However, as this issue will contain the Alumni Fund contributors list, our news column has to be short. So, we'll put what news we can in the cooler, but most of it will be sent on to Hal for the "Smoker" so you will have it long before the next issue. Don't let this blast lead you to think we don't want any more news. Come next column time we'll need more than ever, so keep it coming.
Of course the big news item (apart from the elections and the international situation) is the combined fall activities of the Class. The Holy Cross weekend was really something; the Ski Hut cocktail party was fine with better than seventy five present; and the evening Executive Committee meeting with Rog Wilde, Abe Weld, Charlie Gilson, Reg Miner, Don Sawyer, Hal Braman, John Sullivan, Don Mix and Don Sawyer covered a terrific lot of territory for future plans. You will eventually have all the details. Then the next morning the Class Meeting, the luncheon at Norwich Inn with bus service to and from the game, and the game, and all that followed.
The second big fall event was the Harvard game weekend in Boston. The picnic, the game (apart from the score!), the dinner party at Smith House, the gathering at Chan and Lorna Symmes - everything about it was superlative. As most of us realize, the arranging and implementing credits for both of these affairs goes to Reg Miner so ably aided and abetted by Don Sawyer. These have been such super-successful affairs that Reg now has the permanent assignment as Secretary-General in charge of such gatherings and is already planning a repeat (bigger and better) for the 1957 Brown game, weekend at Hanover on October 12. So mark that date down right now in your 1957 date-books. There's lots more to report on these two parties just passed, and the details will come to you in the "Smoker."
Another of our classmates has been taken from us. Lovell Cook died on October 2. Hank's wife Meg writes, "Dartmouth meant a great deal to Hank, and when I say 'Dartmouth' I mean not only the college but his many fine friends and wonderful associations." Again, the whole class sends its affection, prayers for, and sympathy to Meg and the children. Paul Sanderson said he saw much of Hank during his last couple of weeks, and that "he slept peacefully until he joined the immortals."
The lead 1921 newspaper news of the month concerns Jack Hubbell's recent trip to Russia. Jack, with the Simmons Company as vicepresident, observes that that morning aching back could, no doubt, cause difficult and sour dispositions. We asked Jack for a comment on his trip for the column, and we are grateful for his response:
I spent nine days behind the Iron Curtain visiting Moscow, Kiev and Kharkov. I wanted to find out first-hand how people lived, including a looksee at their homes. I wanted to learn something about Soviet distribution system, with special reference to the part that selling and advertising played, and I wanted to see manufacturing operations. I was able to see the inside of several Russian homes (extremely difficult to accomplish). I had a two-hour conference with the head of the largest department store in Moscow. I was able to inspect several manufacturing plants (which is easy to do), including a mattress factory (which is not easy to get into). I had a session with the head of the University of Moscow; I participated in a conference with Mikoyan, the number three man after B & K. It was my good fortune to have contact with the leading newspaper men. Briefly my reaction is - Drab-Dreary-and-Decrepit. The general atmosphere in a country which does not have freedom of speech is depressing. [Aside, by ye sec. - how right Jack is!] Please remember that I went over as a private citizen. I have no political or economic answers but I certainly got a lot of enlightenment. It was an exciting trip, but the most thrilling sight was the Moscow airport as I took off for the U.S.A. and a reunion with a bunch of Hubbells.
That's all we can hope to squeeze in this issue. However, we must squeeze in this Christmas thought - let's have our next 100% attendance Class reunion this coming December 25 th each in our own homes, or wherever we may be, on our knees, asking the Almighty to help us figure out what we can do to produce PEACE AND GOODWILL TO ALL MEN in this cockeyed, mixed up world of ours. And all you wives, children, families, and friends - if you'll join in with us in this reunion, maybe we can do something about it. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL.
