The most important item, surely, is the very successful "reunion" over the Holy Cross game, October 19-20. You'll receive more personal and complete information in Butts' next Class Letter; he unfortunately had to cancel his reservations because of a death in the family (his aunt). For the moment let me simply remind the Class that we had a group of close to fifty; that we got together in various sized groups three or four times (lunch on the Observatory slope, the game, after the game for a social hour, and dinner together Saturday night). I heard nothing but satisfaction; we have reserved the same motel for next year - first come, first served. Be warned! (Same corresponding home game next fall.)
Penn Haile, living across the river in Norwich, talked to students and others in the Tower Room of the Library: "Suez Challenge to the West," with the conclusion that we have lost heavily in world leadership in the Middle East. Downstairs, our Librarian, Dick Morin, is reported as recently elected president of the New England Library Association - a deserved and natural recognition, of course.
Listening in on conversations when we get together, one hears of plans to retire somewhere in or near Hanover. It doesn't happen as often as planned, as I know in the case of Peanut Eaton, for example; his widow tells me they had hopes of finding satisfaction in their small place in Sunapee, south of here on a lovely lake. I heard similar plans being made recently.
Spud Spaulding and family were far away as the class reuned over the Holy Cross game. Their daughter Sue was married to a Dartmouth-and-Hanover man, Lt. Peter Gulick on Saturday, November 13. Spud was off to Texas with a station-wagon loaded with wedding gifts for the new family, and we hope this was also a good vacation for our hero and spouse. Brad Hersey and Lois report the wedding was all it should have been, with appropriate Dartmouth music setting the tone before the wedding march. Line ('56) was an usher for his sister.
As usual, I have a couple of boys whose lathers are '24. Repeating Tom Carroll's pattern, son Tom Jr. is heading for medical school; it was a pleasure to recommend him for the school of his choice. Recently seen was Doug Craig's son Jim who has returned for graduate study at Tuck. Across Tuck Mall, my son Jon is working for his Master's in electrical engineering, and hoping for one of several scholarships including the Rhodes and Fulbright.
Bob Macaulay is out in the Far East, in Thailand. His mission is with the U. S. Information Service, associated with the Embassy, which works at interesting the free world in this country, where "a problem on the Macon River can be as looming as one that used to bother us on the Rhine." You may see some of his excellent documentary films on color TV, if you're lucky. He was also reported from Hong Kong.
In mid-October I enjoyed talking to the Hartford (Conn.) alumni, while there for a business talk with an advertising group. It was good to see Paul Kane who is associated with the Connecticut Planning Commission to develop State industry and to attract new business; he introduced me. Also seen, and a long-missing face, was Roger Stephenson whose son Roger Jr., born in 1939, is a freshman here at Dartmouth. Sorry to have missed Pop Foster, Roily Taylor, and others. There was no time for advance publicity, as the alumni group had little notice that I'd be in town. I'll be looking for classmates when I go on the road again soon - Cleveland Providence, Rockford (Ill.), Newark, and Philadelphia - all for the same consultationtalks to industrial advertising groups.
Dutch Diehl writes from Evanston, Ill., where he is an industrial and manufacturing engineer with Webcor, Inc. in the electronics division. His oldest son Ned is now nineteen and a freshman at College, reluctantly leaving two hot-rods in the family garage;' Laurie, fourteen, is interested in music and out for first trumpet in the Evanston High School this year; Steve is nine. Like their children, the Diehls have their own hobbies: Mary is president of the local Garden Club and likes African Violets - as who doesn't? Dutch tends the tropical fish, gardens and enjoys the beagle pup who limps through life with the handicap of being named Beauregard.
Another near-miss at the Hartford meeting, my memory tells me, was Al Robinson, who lives in West Hartford — a city in its own right, filled with insurance people. Al is with the Aetna. They missed the 30th reunion because of family sickness but were here for Commencement in 1955. They have two daughters: Marcia is a senior at Syracuse, majoring in Business Administration; Susan is a senior in High School and interested in Physical Therapy. Here is a story of long-time staying with the original job; Al has been with Aetna since 1925. By coincidence, Bob Bragg (also Hartford and not seen) was born on the same day and year as Al. I've been fascinated to see as many as four or five who share the same birthday and live near each other; I've commented on it on their birthday cards which seems to interest the ones concerned, judging by their comments to me. Others in the Hartford area, whom Al reports seeing on occasion, are Ed Nason, Dave Solly and Art Watson.
Finally, Curt Bird breaks a long silence from New York. He asks if I remember his motorcycle? Boy, do I! Especially riding back-seat with him up from White River; we almost got some steaks when a herd of cows came out on the road. That one ride cured me; never again. Dana Bent? Yes, he was here for the Holy Cross game with his wife. Dinny missed the 30th because of a death in the family just at that time. Curt came to Dartmouth from Montclair with Fred Eaton and Walt Kidde. He reminds me they won the Plaque for the school delegation with the highest average, probably because Bill Gardner got straight As, balanced by Guisse Fuget (who withdrew to go to Amherst after one semester).
