This is indeed the winter of our discontent, as the apt phrase goes. Elsewhere I have recorded the death of Stan Lyon after a long illness with cancer. As this goes to press, a bit late, I have a news clipping of the death on January 10 of Clarence Stilwill. I will have an obituary in the next issue.

Several classmates living nearby, and knowing of the spontaneous local response to my request that no flowers be sent to the funeral of my wife, Kits, have urged me to mention the nature of that response - and so the following personal item is written. Our family have been members of the White Church and so several friends started a fund for a memorial in the church in her name. One idea, borrowed by the friends from other similar situations, is a memorial chapel as part of the church. This is a very real expression of affection which I hope to see realized in this or some other form. It is in keeping with the Class's purchase of Memorial books for classmates who have left us, with which I am heartily in favor.

Butts Lamson will make his first bow as editor of the Class Letter. I want to thank many of you who have sent personal news to him, or to me for him. I have a dilly of a poem from Keith Drake, but it is being analyzed by the English Department to make sure it says anything in its five stanzas - and if so, what.

A few of you are blushing violets and enjoin me NOT to print the news you do send. I hope to persuade all such that many of us want to know what's new with you-all. Here's one item: Frank Karslake, Chicago lithographer, has been elected to the board of trustees of Chautauqua. That takes me back to World War I days when I was working on a farm in up-state New York and had my first taste of the circuit, and thought it top entertainment.
