It may be that there has been some occasion, other than at Hanover, when more than 70 men from one class were gathered together. However, until someone else stands up and puts forth a claim, the 1927 Class dinner in New York on October 31, with 71 members of the Class in attendance, will stand as a record. Sparked by chairman Bob Stevens, the committee left nothing undone to insure this great turnout and a most enjoyable evening for all who were fortunate enough to be there. The group began gathering about five-thirty, and the next two hours were spent in greeting old friends and catching up on what they had been doing. As the size of the gathering grew, so did the noise level, and there were doubtless a number of classmates who had to speak in whispers the next day.
Following a fine dinner, we were treated to a remarkably able and interesting dissertation on the state of the world and the part that the United States is playing in it, by Dud Bonsai, who is chairman of the Federal Loyalty-Security Program Committee of the New York Bar Association, and who has spent a good deal of time in Europe as a member of the International Commission of Jurists studying what happens to the administration of law under Communist regimes.
Following dinner we were entertained by our own quartette, and after the commuters had rushed for their trains, the few who never go to bed adjourned to the bar until the small hours. The prize for the longest distance traveled was again won by Vern Whitney, who came from Walla Walla, Wash.
During the afternoon preceding the dinner, your Executive Committee held a meeting during which plan's were discussed for further strengthening the Class through improved organization, and a report on reunion plans was presented by Shorty Oliver. If advance planning can assure the success of anything, the reunion will certainly be successful, because Shorty and his committee are doing a splendid job. This will be our first reunion with the classes who were in College with us, 1926 and 1928, which will give many of us an opportunity to see friends whom we have not seen in thirty years.
By now you have received your copy of Les Battin's new Class Directory. This was a real labor of love, and if you are as impressed as I am by the terrific job that Les has done for all of us, it might be a nice thing to drop him a line and tell him so. It's even possible, though I doubt if Les would make any promises right now, that if we show him that we really like it he would put out new editions from time to time, as our wandering population requires.
Those of you who have received communications from Howie Mullin recently, written on White House stationery, are aware of the fact that he is now in Washington, serving as Executive Director of the President's Citizens Advisers on the Mutual Security Program. This is the committee headed up by Benjamin Fairless set up for the purpose of making recommendations to the President on foreign aid. Howie expects to be in Washington until about the middle of the spring, when the work of the committee should be done and he will return to New York and U. S. Steel.
Ed Ruth, who for the past several years has been living in Detroit as zone manager for Oldsmobile, has been promoted to Midwest Regional Manager, with headquarters in Chicago. Ed has been with General Motors ever since graduation from Dartmouth, and joined Oldsmobile in 1931 as a retail salesman. He later was district representative becoming assistant zone manager in Kansas City in 1948 and zone manager at Charlotte, N. C., in 1951. He moved to Detroit in 1952.
Cliff Randall joined the ranks of the grandfathers on September 30, when a daughter was born to his son William and wife.
Wayne Hancock, who was principal of Colebrook Academy, is now teaching English at Kennett High School, at North Conway, N. H.
Larry Scammon is the chairman of the Every-Member Canvass for the First Congregational Church in Stoneham, Mass.
Bert Gruver is stage manager for the production of "Witness for the Prosecution" which is scheduled to open in Chicago this month. Bert was ill for several years after his discharge from the Army following World War II, and has had to take it very easy since. This is the first job that he has been able to take, and should indicate that his health is much better.
Word has just been received of the death of Bob Birch on September 3 of a stroke, and of Herb Rubin on October 24 of a heart attack.
Following is the list of contributors to the last Alumni Fund. It's a long list, but not as long as it should be. There are many names which have appeared on every such list for the last 29 years, but there are others which have appeared on past lists and are missing this time. This is our one big chance to give material expression to the gratitude which we all feel for what Dartmouth did for us. Let's all be sure that next year our name is not missing.
Best wishes for a very merry Christmas.
