Feel like a sailor on shore leave struggling to get his land legs after three months at sea. Yes we did it, right on schedule - took our motor sailer from here to Bermuda - Azores - Ireland - Scotland (Caledonian Canal) — Sweden (Gota Canal) to Stockholm and back to Denmark for the winter. Almost 6000 miles of smooth, sunny seas and light breezes. Ready for more in Europe next year - hope they can produce another summer like this one.
In three months '27 mail really stacks up. Will pass on all I can crowd in this month. First, Phil Fowler says all set for '27's Fall Reunion October 10-11. Sunset is reserved for '27 - banquet at Lake Morey Inn with bus to and fro - good idea, Phil. Understand you don't have to take the balloon test if you are just a passenger. Class meeting and breakfast, Saturday at the Inn. Be there - hear?
The July issue of the mag included a picture and the citation when the College awarded to Frell Owl the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving or nicer '27'er.
Speaking about honors - Dr. Edward E.Redcay (Ed to you and me) was given the Distinguished Service Award by State University College, Plattsburgh, N. Y.; an award first presented to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Will send details to Bill North, but congratulations, Ed, from all of '27.
While we are talking of Kudos - how about a big pat on the back of all of the Class and particularly Sam Wormser and his class agents for the fabulous '27 record in the Alumni Fund this year?
Coggy Broer, if his note of early summer is any indication, is back on his feet after some ticker trouble. Great, Coggy. Sends in word that the "Ethan Hitchcock Memorial Trophy Ocean Race" was run on June 28. A great memorial to a great '27'er.
Tom Wheeler of Troy, Ohio, complains that he doesn't get to Hanover often enough. With the new roads, Tom, it's a breeze - try it.
Among others running here and there - Al Lawrence and Jean to Moscow and all iron curtain capitals this past summer, came home by boat. Says he attended Alumni Seminar in Florida - recommends them as very worthwhile.
Elmer Worth - "No earth shaking news from Bel Air, Md. All I can boast about is that I have put 10,000 miles on my Porsche 911, so far without a scratch. Which goes a little way towards reducing my psychological wounds incident to totaling my Lotus Elan after only 5 months and on the campus drive yet."
Len Dunn sends a nice long note from Mesa, Ariz., with no signature. Endorses college action over occupation of Ad. Building. After 8 years of retirement he is "thoroughly enjoying it. Golf at least twice a week, year around - swim in our pool several times daily. Any '27ers give us a call, 969-2372 — be happy to bend an elbow." - What are we waiting for?
Phil Corliss - "Am breeding cactus hybrids extensively. Discovered Spain last fall - looks like it will be London and Spain each fall - sunny Mexico for a month or two each winter. Can live cheaper there than home. $6 day for room and meals in first class hotel on Costa del Sol when crowds leave and weather is best - October. San Diego is great too - don't any of you ever get this way?"
Bill Hoge's wife sends the unfortunate word that Bill has been in the hospital for 8 months with nurses around the clock. Let's drop him a line, 3422 N. Abingdon St., Arlington, Va. 22207.
Hale Ham rendezvoused with two daughters and one husband at Squam Lake, N. H., this summer. "Moon Island where the dust is pine needles and the risk is nil - makes me think of Hanover regularly."
Fritz Kortlucke from his new home in New Preston, Conn. - "Nora and I saw a red fox and a very young doe rolling about on our lawn; not together silly! Tom andDot Gillespie and Frank and Evelyn Strong stopped by - keep coming, our phone is 868-2620."
Ernie Field, another San Diegoan, says "I finally retired from teaching at Vista High School - but am keeping my post as assistant to director of Economic Education at San Diego State College and will teach one course at Grossmont Junior College this fall."
Paul Richter '20 of Concord is the best '27 correspondent we have in New Hampshire, excluding our hard-working News- letter Editor Bill North of course. Paul sends me a clipping with a picture of a very handsome young looking fellow - FredAuer who just retired from N. H. Dept. of Highways where he has served the last 20 years as head of the Planning Division. Congrats, Fred - now maybe you can show in Hanover for '27 doings.
Van Ingham, another one in Europe this summer - new Opel through Scotland (why didn't you honk, Van, as we went down Caledonian Canal?), down through England, Newark and the Norfolk Broads - Van stating, "they look good."
Another peripatetic (is that what I mean?) '27'er, Don O'Hara now Florida resident "leave for Nassau, hurricane permitting by ship through Panama Canal to San Francisco to keep house for our daughter - expecting her fourth." S. F. '27'ers, take note.
Your busy Class Bequest Chairman, PaulRevere O'Connell, gets busier - has just been added to several more boards of directors including "The Hanover Insurance Company and the Hanover Life Insurance Company." Yes, Paul, it seems appropriate.
More next time — see you Hanover, October 11!
