With Big Green Teams
December 1956

WINTER moved into Hanover during Fall Houseparties weekend (Nov. 10-12), bringing to an end one of the mildest and best falls that Hanover has seen for almost a decade. It snowed slightly the evening before the Columbia football game, and the temperature plunged to 19 degrees and remained near freezing through the weekend. The weather served notice that fall was ending and winter approaching, and even as the Big Green fall teams move into action against final opponents, Dartmouth's winter teams move vigorously to work in preseason practice sessions.

A veteran-studded basketball squad, defending Ivy League champion, is rounding into shape under the watchful eye of Coach Doggie Julian. In the Davis Rink veteran hockey coach Eddie Jeremiah is sending his forces through long sessions in hopes of a major improvement this winter. The swimming team, minus the services of Coach Karl Michael, who is in Australia coaching the U. S. Olympic diving squad, is being trained until January by team members; while the squash team speeds up its matches and the track squad awaits the end of the cross-country season. Freshman squads in all sports are now out, with the first cuts already made in hockey and basketball.

Although there are still a few late games remaining on the fall schedules, the season is far enough along to report that this has not been one of the best falls on the athletic side by any means. Dartmouth's varsity football team, hampered by the worst streak of injuries in a decade, has won four, lost three and tied one, with

one game remaining. The varsity soccer team finally came to an off-year with a record of only three wins against six deeats and one game remaining, while Dartmouth's cross-country team has won a single dual meet in five, with only the IC4A competition ahead. The JV football team split even, winning one and losing one. On the freshman level, the '60 football squad has looked impressive in winning four games against one loss. The freshman soccer team has a 3-2 record, and the cross-country runners have a single win against four losses in dual competition.

Combined won-lost totals for Dartmouth varsity and freshman teams show sixteen wins, one tie and si defeats, a fall record somewhat below the average of recent years.
