Coach Tom Dent's varsity lacrosse team has been weaker this spring than in the past several years, particularly on offense, and the results show it. To date the Big Green has a record of four wins against six defeats and a league record of three wins against two defeats for a second-place standing.
Since last report the Indians lost to league-leading Yale 14-5, defeated Princeton 8-5 and Cornell 15-5, lost to Syracuse 19-7, then defeated Williams 9-5 and Penn 12-5 before losing to R.P.I. 10-6 and being edged by Harvard 11-10 in the most recent encounter.
The game with Harvard was one of the best of the season. Tom Conlan and Line Spaulding got the Indians away to a 2-1 lead, then Spaulding, Doc Rice and Skip Bohn added a goal apiece with Rice collecting another in the third period to send Dartmouth out front 6-5. At this point goalie Clem Malin was carried from the field with a sprained ankle and moments later defenseman Lee Gammill went out with an injured leg. This softened the Big Green defenses and the Crimson went on to pull out an 11-10 win.
The team lineup in games this season has seen Ail-American goalie, Captain Clem Malin in the nets, with Wally Pugh, Lee Gammill and Dick Darby on defense. Veterans Tom Conlan, Cal Perry and Line Spaulding have been the midfield mainstays, with John Benisch, Doc Rice and Skip Bohn on the attack line.
Gammill and Pugh have been particularly good on defense and there is little doubt that Malin's goal-tending has been all-important. But a lack of real offensive power and, once again, a lack of sufficient spring practice have been the chief factors in Dartmouth's six losses.
