Space limitations preclude a complete report on all winter teams at this time. The Dartmouth swimming and ski teams move into their schedules in early January. Swimming coach Karl Michael is now on his way back to Hanover after very successfully coaching the U. S. diving team in the Olympic games (and filing a protest at Russian judging in that event). The Dartmouth ski team under the tutelage of Coach Walt Prager and assistant Al Merrill has been searching out available snow for practice and opens its schedule in January.
The Dartmouth rifle team, coached by M/Sgt (USMC) William Kuhn has defeated Harvard, Colorado A & M, and Beaumont and lost to Virginia thus far. The team won second place in the Ivy League division last year and is led this winter by Captain Randy Patterson.
Dartmouth's wrestling team opened its season by defeating McGill 24-13 at Montreal. Harvey Weiss in the x 30-pound division, Jim Young at 147 pounds, John Chilson at 157, Fred Pitzner at 177, and Bob Bickell at 191 were the Big Green victors in this first match. The wrestlers used four freshmen in this match, but will be unable to use freshmen in future matches, although some of the '60 members are better than their varsity counterparts.
Freshman teams on the whole look promising on the basis of early-season reports. Both basketball and hockey have a number of talented candidates, and the track squad is better than usual, as is squash. Freshman teams will be covered in the February ALUMNI MAGAZINE in more detail.
A Happy New Year to all!
