THIRTY faculty promotions were announced at the close of the last aca- demic year by Dean of the Faculty, Arthur E. Jensen. He also announced the reinstitution of the rank of Associate Professor at Dartmouth after 35 years of disuse. He said that the rank may or may not carry tenure, depending on individual circumstances.
Four assistant professors in the undergraduate college were appointed directly to full professorships: Raymond W. Barratt, botany; Richard B. McCormack '41, history; John L. Stewart, English; and Elmer Harp Jr., anthropology.
Associate professorships were granted to four assistant professors. They are Harry T. Schultz '37, English; Laurence I. Radway, government; Leonard M. Rieser Jr. '44, physics, and John H. Copenhaver Jr. '46, zoology.
Francis W. King was promoted from Assistant Professor of Psychology to Clinical Psychologist, Office of Student Counseling, with the rank of associate professor.
Ten teachers in the College were promoted from instructor to assistant professor. They are: Thaddeus Seymour and Lou B. Noll, English; Robert E. Huke '48, geography; David R. Fuller, music; William P. Davis, John W. Dewdney, and William T. Doyle, physics; James F. Ross, religion; Lawrence E. Flarvey, romance languages; and Joseph Berger, sociology.
Eleven promotions in the associated schools of medicine, engineering, and business administration were announced. In the Dartmouth Medical School, John A. Murtagh Jr. was named Professor of Otolaryngology from an assistant professorship, and Walter C. Lobitz was promoted from assistant professor of Dermatology to full professor. Sven M. Gundersen was raised from assistant professor to Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine.
Three men, instructors in the Medical School, have been made assistant professors: Otis F. Jillson, dermatology; Robert G. Fisher, neurosurgery, and Robert E. Nye Jr., physiology.
In the Thayer School of Engineering, Carl F. Long was promoted from instructor to Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering.
Two assistant professors in the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration were named to full professorships: Wayne G. Broehl Jr., business administration, and Kenneth R. Davis, marketing. Raised from assistant professor to associate professor at the Tuck School were Leonard E. Morrissey '48T, accounting, and Harold E. Angelo, business administration.
