The Dartmouth Club of Western Pennsylvania held its annual summer picnic on the tenting grounds of Shadyside Academy. After a much too strenuous game of softball in which the married men once again proved that an ounce of concentration is worth a pound of speed and agility, the group partook of a catered barbecue featuring cold potato salad and warm ice cream. The men then adjourned to the beer barrel and held the annual election of officers.
Sam Coombs '44 was elected President despite the hearty objections raised against his candidacy (by Sam himself). Nate Parker Jr. '52 was elected Secretary. Wayne Komara '52 was re-elected Treasurer in recognition of the splendid job he did the year before. {Being in a liquid position himself, he was willing to carry the club on credit.)
Twenty-one members of the club took part in the Fourth Annual Ivy League Golf Tournament at Oakmont and finished a strong third. Brown took temporary possession of the cup by permitting only sub-par golfers to participate.
Jim Melville '50 stole the athletic headlines of the year by upsetting several of Western Pennsylvania's top-seeded tennis players in local competition. Since Jim was strictly an intramural tennis player at Dartmouth, he was asked how he managed to achieve such success as a graduate. His modest reply: "I gave up golf this summer."
