A 4 months' abundance of '26 news. The Class had a busy summer.
WE DISTINGUISHED OURSELVES
That eminent Wilmington attorney, Ed Steel, was appointed United States District Judge for the District of Delaware. (Ed, perhaps your graduation gown still fits!) At this year's graduation ceremony, Dick Lattimore was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. For President Dickey's complete citation, see July ALUMNI MAGAZINE, page 22. Albany (N. Y.) newspapers report that "The newly-elected president of Albany Business College is Prentiss Carnell. He is also vice president of Albany Savings Bank; a director of the National Commercial Bank & Trust Co., Albany Academy, Albany Home for Children, and Albany Institute of History and Art." The August issue of "Poetry Pilot," monthly publication of the American Academy of Poets, honored Richard Eberhart as Poetry Editor of the Month. Courtney and Marge Brown have written a booklet report on their Mid-East trip under the auspices of the Eisenhower Fellowship Award Committee, "Journey Toward Understanding," available ($2.00) at the Dartmouth Bookstore. From strife-torn Beirut, Lebanon, comes the announcement of the election of W. A. (Sandy) Campbell to what must be one of the world's most difficult jobs: - Vice President and Manager of Government Relations for the Trans-Arabian Pipe Line Co.
Mr. Campbell joined Tapline in Beirut in 1947, after serving as president of the American Levant Shipping Co., also in Beirut. From 1934 to 1942, he was field director of the committee which excavated ancient Antioch, and, during this time, served as field archaeologist with Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N. J. He has also been an associate professor of archaeology at Wellesley College. Mr. Campbell holds an M.F.A. degree from Princeton, and a B.A. from Dartmouth. Though born in Joliet, Ill., he now considers Eureka, Mont., as home.
George Champion was elected a Director of the Southern Railway Co. Bob McConnaughey is now associated as counsel for the Washington law firm of Powell, Dorsey, Blum & White. Bob Salinger served as an official at the Curtis Cup matches between the best women golfers of Britain and the United States. Hub Harwood reports that the ladies played almost as well as Hal Marshall, whose booming drives financially wrecked Hub's birthday outing. (On Hal's first tour of rugged Brae Burn, he shot an 85.) Ken Foster was named Assistant Vice President of the New Haven (Conn.) Savings Bank. Walt Tomlinson was appointed to the Andover (Mass.) Planning Board. Steve Weston was reappointed to the Danvers (Mass.) Town Finance Committee. Duck Heacox became eligible for retirement as Fisheries Manager for the New York State Conservation Dept., but has been persuaded to continue till the department's reorganization has been completed. Last but not least of the summer's achievements was Don Nostrand's recovery from a 3-month bout with infectious hepatitis. To quote Bob Salinger:
Don will soon be himself again, if he sticks to doctor's orders, which eliminate all outside activities for one full year. In community, church, club and college activities, Don has carried far more than his share of the load for a long time, and has done every job outstandingly well. The time has come for him to take it easy for a while.
AND SO DID OUR CHILDREN
IN ATHLETICS. Hal and Marian Marshall's son, David '59, was elected captain of Dartmouth's varsity baseball team. And Dick Husband writes that son Richard '61 won the broad jump in each freshman meet last spring... setting a new Dartmouth freshman record in the process.
IN WEDDINGS. Daughters of the Chuck Abbotts, the Hal Marshalls and the Jim Sullivans all permitted their '26 Dads to play the father-of-the-bride role this summer. And the Sid Haywards' daughter, Mary Ann, was a member of the bridal party at the wedding of President Dickey's daughter.
IN PROGENY. Herb Redman, Bob Salinger and Ken Weeks all became grandfathers (what an old-sounding word!) this summer . .. Herb and Ken for the first time; Bob for the second.
COINCIDENCE. At the Washington-area Dartmouth picnic, athletic teen-agers Bob and John McConnaughey were snagging passes thrown 50 yards and more by a husky Congressman; - discovered the passer was their father's classmate, Eddy Dooley.
AND TRAGEDY. With heavy heart, we report the death of the Charlie Bishops' 20-year-old son Richard, last June, in an accident aboard the destroyer "Cogswell." To Charlie and Edith we extend the profound sympathy of the entire Class.
