"WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA" adds one more Dartmouth '26-er to its illustrious ranks, in the person of, and we quote:

ALLEN, Carl E„ banker, b. Carbondale, Ill., Mar. 13, 1905; s. Carlos Eben and Maude Vrooman (Willsey) A.; grad. Phillips Andover Acad. 1922. A.B. Dartmouth 1926. m. Katharine Avery, May 21, 1932; children - Nancy Winslow, Avery, Mary Willsey, Katharine. With Nat. City Bank of N. Y. 1926-50; asst. cashier, 1931-35; asst. v.p., 1935-40; v.p. 1940-50; pres. Bank of Chgo., 230 S. LaSalle St., Chgo.

You may be surprised to learn that in entering "Who's Who" Carl joins no less than seventeen other '26-ers! Sometime, when space permits, we'd like to print the writeups of all seventeen. In this issue, however, there's room just to list the names. Here's our Class Hall-of-Fame: Carl Allen, Pat Allen, Paul Allen (Sec. Note: Why couldn't WE have been named Allen!), Carle Blunt, Gail Borden, George Borglum, Courtney Brown, George Champion, Tom Colt, Dick Eberhart, Ed Fowler, Paul Harper, Dick Lattimore, Bob McConnaughey, Red Merril, Hugh Morrison, Tom Murdough, and Stebby Stebbins. It is interesting to note that this group is made up of seven educators, two physicians, two lawyers, two bankers, one editor, one diplomat, one librarian, one museum director, and one manufacturer.

"WHO'S WHO IN LEBANON" (N. H.) would find Dr. Harry W. Savage's name at the top of the list. In last month's column we mentioned that Harry was a candidate for the Council of the newly incorporated city of Lebanon. Not only was he elected a Councilor, with the largest vote of any of the 30 candidates, but the Council (by unanimous vote) then proceeded to name him Lebanon's first Mayor! Congratulations, Harry! It's nice to have a mayor in the Class again ... now that Mayor Eddie Dooley of Mamaroneck has become a Congressman, and Mayor Tom Herlihy of Wilmington a Judge. Since Lebanon is no ordinary city, like London or New York, but a spot once near-and-dear to 'most all of us, we believe you'd enjoy a few excerpts from Harry's inaugural address:

Lebanon becoming a city doesn't mean we will have street cars here tomorrow. Our aim as Councilmen is to take first things first.

Perhaps we (the Council) will not be as popular in Lebanon two years from now. We are human beings, and may make mistakes. The Council needs and requests patience, understanding and cooperation from every citizen. We hope you will treat with patience our attempts to do things for the good of Lebanon.

"WHO'S WHO IN THE MARINES" woulddoubtless mention Brigadier General WilliamW. Stickney, and might also include some ofthe information we recently received fromWing Medical Officer, Capt. Albert E. Morris:

Here in Japan I am probably about as far around the girdled earth from Hanover as anyone in '26. Since February (1957) I have been out here in Iwakuni, with the First Marine Aircraft Wing. It has been an interesting tour of duty, as Japan is a fascinating country. However, because of the Marines' no-dependent policy, the family has been unable to be here. I am glad to say that I now have orders back to the States, specifically to the Naval Air Station, Quonset Point, R. I., where I expect to begin my new duty late in March. I am also looking forward to occasional trips to Hanover, as two sons are there: George in Tuck School, and Edward in the Class of '59. Best wishes for a Happy New Year, or Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu, as they say here.

Welcome home, Al! We're all looking for-ward to seeing you again at '26 get-togethers.

"WHO'S WHO IN HORTICULTURE" (honest, fellas, this is the last!) would certainlymention an honor bestowed on Chuck Webster, as reported in the New York HeraldTribune:

Mrs. W. Redmond Cross, of Bernardsville, N. J., president of the Horticultural Society of New York, Inc., for the last seven years, has resigned on the advice of her physician. Charles D. Webster, of Islip, L. I., has been appointed by the Board to take her place as president. Mr. Webster is a director of the Society, and of the American Horticultural Council. He is a graduate of Dartmouth, Class of 1926, and was in the United States Naval Reserve for three years during World War II. He has recently retired after an active career of 28 years in business. He is an ardent horticulturalist and gardener, with a particular interest in conservation.

IN THE '26 MAIL-BAG

From Hugh and Charlotte Morrison:

We have driven from Naples, Fla., to Ottawa, Canada, all in one month! We drove to Florida to spend the Christmas holidays on Siesta Key, and had a wonderful vacation. This last weekend we drove to the Seigniory Club in Canada, to attend the conference the American Alumni Council. It was really going to extremes, to jump from the beaches on Siesta Key to the wilds of Canada, all in one short month!

From our slugging freshman left-fielder,Ben Zaeder:

My baseball is now limited to playing catch with my eleven-year-old son Jeff. My older son John, is at Yale. (Ben is with the American Steel and Wire Co., in Erie, Pa.)

And a newsy letter from our HanoverBank (New York City) Vice President,Charley Bishop:

Barbara, our oldest, who graduated from Colby Junior College in 1950, is with Booz, Allen and Hamilton, and is living in New York. Bus, our oldest son, is a Ist Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, obtained his wings at Corpus Christi in April, and is at present a Flight Instructor at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. He graduated from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1955, and married a classmate three days after Commencement. The Marine Corps called him up that July, and he has been serving since that time. They have a daughter, our only grandchild, who was one year old last August. Richard, our younger son, attended Larry Leavitt's Vermont Academy and enlisted in the Navy a year ago. He is an Electrician's Mate, Third Class, and is on a Submarine Tender based at San Diego.

My work for the bank takes me into Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania regularly. When in Detroit, I usually see Johnny Manser and Johnny Heavenrich. When in Cincinnati, I spend some time with Jim Traquair. In Pittsburgh, I see Nate Parker and John Gearhart, and occasionally Kier Boyd. Several months ago I had a very pleasant lunch hour with Gail Borden in Dayton.

"Mod" and Ruth Moderwell were recently presented with two granddaughters in six weeks ... by son John (Lt. USAF), Dartmouth '53, on December 17, and by daughter Mary (Mrs. Theodore D. Kurrus) on January 28.

IN CLOSING

A brave and wonderful letter from Jinks Brookes, on the letterhead of Brookes, Lynchand McDonald, Lawyers, East Liverpool,Ohio. Although the tragedy was reportedpreviously in the magazine, we believe it willcome as a shock to most of the Class to learnthat Jinks' and Alice's son Bob '59, waskilled last March in one of the worst ofthose late-at-night, back-to-Hanover auto accidents. In response to our letter, Jinks wrote:

We did indeed receive a cruel blow last year, and still find it hard to believe. Alice and I were in Florida when we heard - a long way off. It would be hard to tell you how much we appreciated all that Dean McDonald and others at Hanover did to help. One nice thing is to know that Bob was happy; no one could have loved Dartmouth more.

As you can see, I am a small-town lawyer, and am one of those fortunate souls who loves his work. Perhaps that is why I have never developed a full-blown hobby. I am afflicted with a slight touch of "do-it-yourself," and some kind friends say I could readily get extra work as a bar-tender. But that's about all. As for my family, our six-teen-year-old daughter Amy is at Grier School, Tyrone, Pa., and will soon be angling for a Carnival bid. Again, thanks for writing.
