Hub Harwood has already reported in Chip's "Smoke Signals" on the fast-moving August reunion attended by 24 classmates and 20 squaws. Distance was no deterrent! First place to Shub and Janet Owen from Marshfield, Wis., and second place to BobEdgar from Grosse Pointe, Mich. See the September "Smoke Signals" for complete details.

Wow again! Ed Hanlon's report as class treasurer (reproduced last month in our class bulletin "Smoke Signals") again shows that our class treasury is in prime financial condition. Ed and Evelyn deserve our most sincere thanks for their time, thought, and energy in keeping us solvent plus!

Jim Jenkins has been elected president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Jim has been on the Board of Managers since 1955, and treasurer of the Society since 1960. A vice president of Bankers Trust Company, he is also a director of Bush Terminal Buildings Company and several other New York corporations.

A September wedding joined Miss Mary Ellen Kottgen of Westport, Conn., and Charles M. McKenna Jr., son of Charlieand Helen McKenna of Norwich, Vt. Young Charlie, a graduate of R.P.I., is an engineer with Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., Stratford.

Monty Colladay writes that he and Nina just celebrated the birth of their eleventh grandchild. After retirement from the State Department in 1961, Monty and Nina spent nearly ten months in Europe "just driving where and when we wanted to and doing all the things we never had time for while I was living and working there." And, he adds, "We are already talking 1926 reunion in Hanover in June 1966." Their retirement address is 4960 Jewell Street, San Diego, Calif.

Bob Stopford has resigned as public rela- tions coordinator of J. P. Stevens & Co. to join The Manning Public Relations Firm, Inc. (New York City) as executive vicepresident. At the same time Bob resigned as president of Woolens & Worsteds of America, Inc. In his new connection Bob will be primarily concerned with overall planning of client company programs and the development of new business.

Roger R. Lenke, son of Sid Lenke, and Jonathan Newcomb, son of Russell Newcomb, and Richard B. Eberhart, son of Richard G. Eberhart are included in the entering freshman class. Perhaps there are other '26 freshman sons in the Class of 1968 but official word has not yet reached me.

An ice skating arena in Concord. N.H., planned for opening in the fall of 1965, will be named for Douglas N. Everett, civic and business leader, and an outstanding American hockey player and skater. The building, being developed by Concord Ice Skating Arena, Inc., a non-profit corporation, will house an artificial ice rink and accommodations for 1800 spectators. Doug, now president of Morrill & Everett, real estate and insurance, is board chairman of the New Hampshire Savings Bank; acting chairman of the City Planning Board; an officer and director of Concord Regional Development Corporation; and a past member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. Our congratulations to Doug on this additional honor.

Ralph F. Gilbert, associated for many years with theatres in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, has recently joined the staff of the Berlin (N.H.) "Reporter" as plant manager.

By the time you read this the football season will be well advanced. Keep posted on special '26 gatherings by reading Chip's "Smoke Signals" which always has "the mostest the soonest." (Time lapse from "writing to reading" my class notes is at least 6 weeks!) The big fall event will be the '26 luncheon in Cambridge, followed by the Charles River cruise to the Harvard Stadium on October 24. If you haven't received complete details contact Don Norstrand at Thomas Long Company, 40 Summer Street, Boston.

ANNIVERSARIES

Fred Rowe, one of the few remaining 1926 bachelors, recently moved from Dallas to 55 Rodeo Ave., Sausalito, Calif., following his retirement after 35 years with American Chain & Cable Company.

For more than 38 years with Chase Brass & Copper Company, Inc., Vincent Meyer was recently appointed regional manager for the districts of Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Detroit, and Cleveland. When last heard from he and family were in the process of moving from Cincinnati to Cleveland. He reports having a son and two daughters but no grandchildren as yet!

Dwight W. Butterfield, now superintendent in the Traffic Department at Albany, New York, in September completed 37 years with New York Telephone Company. He and Kay observed their 34th wedding anniversary on July 11. Their family consists of daughter Karen, and son James, and four grandchildren. Address: Highlands Drive, McKnownville, Albany, N.Y.

A few days ago I saw Paul Britt at the home office of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company of which he is now vicepresident. This spring Paul celebrated completion of 38 years with that company. Paul and Emma, married 37 years this September, have two sons, a daughter, and six grandchildren - all living within a radius of 25 miles from their parents' home at 73 Knollwood Road, East Hartford.

Just received a nice letter from GeorgeP. Bellaire reporting that he and Marion, now married 34 years, are thoroughly enjoying their retirement, "living quietly and modestly" at 351 Wayne Avenue, Oakland, Calif., overlooking Lake Merritt. George retired six years ago after 30 years' service with family-owned Hill Brothers Co.

Another of our classmates who has devoted his entire life to world health problems is Dr. Paul A. Harper, since 1951 professor of Maternal and Child Health at the School of Hygiene and Public Health of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. His department is cooperating with the Directorate of Health of the government of Pakistan in a study of that country's population problem. This has taken Paul to Pakisan for four to six weeks each year since 1959. He reports that "The family planning part of the program in our small population area (in Pakistan) of about 50,000 people has rather suddenly changed from a very slow rate of progress to one which offers substantial hope of success. This is due to the fact that the new intrauterine contraceptive devices appear to be almost selling themselves among the highly illiterate population with which the government is dealing in the village where we are working." Paul and Esther and their three teenage children live at 21 Elmwood Road, Baltimore 10, Md.

Jack Bickford, having completed five years as a member of the governing body of his local municipality, is the Republican nominee for another three-year term. But his vocation continues to be that of a financial consultant "with captive customers (and investments) in the restaurant, motel, plastics, and electronics industries." Jack and Lydia, who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary last fall, report that son John recently completed a year of post-graduate work at the University of Florida and expects soon to be in military service. Son Charles, now doing graduate work in English at University of Pennsylvania, has an ultimate goal of teaching at the college level. Daughter Lydia is now a freshman at University of Wisconsin. With all three children away from home, frau Lydia has returned to newspaper writing with a vengeance. Address: Washington Valley Road, Morristown, N.J.

'27's West Coast Summer Rendezvous attracted these class members: (l to r)Roily Howes, Phil Thompson, Bill Abbott, Bruce McKennan, Bed Williams.
