IF other areas of the country need inspiration in this second and final year of Dartmouth's Capital Gifts Campaign, Hanover appears to be out to provide it. A goal of $250,000 has been set for the Hanover area, and at the first report meeting of the Advanced Gifts Committee last month, 88 contributions and pledges totaling $179,000 were announced. Dr. John P. Bowler '15. chairman of the Hanover campaign, said that this amount represents only a small portion of the gifts expected from about 1,000 prospects in the area. He predicted that the objective of $250,000 will be well over-subscribed.
The first round of area campaigns this fall launches the final stage of the campaign to raise $17,000,000. Following Hanover's pace-setting lead, about 35 other areas from coast to coast have organized volunteer committees for personal solicitation, and early reports have given strong encouragement to the campaign leaders, headed by national chairman Charles J. Zimmerman '23. As of October 21, Mr. Zimmerman announced, $10,500,000 had been subscribed toward the $17,000,000 goal. He also reported that substantial progress is being made in the solicitation of corporations, foundations and other friends of Dartmouth exclusive of the alumni.
President Dickey who has traveled back and forth across the country this past year, addressing meetings of campaign workers, had six more speaking engagements in October. He visited Chicago, Northern New Jersey, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Houston and San Antonio. The speaking load this year will be carried mainly by Orton H. Hicks '21, new Vice President of the College in charge of development, alumni affairs, and public relations. His schedule for the first half of November will take him to Dayton, Columbus, Louisville, Cincinnati, Rockford, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Omaha, Denver, Colorado Springs and Salt Lake City.
