In early September Coach Blackman had picked Penn as the team Dartmouth must defeat if the Indians were to retain the Ivy League crown. Playing at Franklin Field, the Quakers proved Blackman right as they shut out the Indians by a 13-0 score.
Senior halfback Fred Doelling was outstanding for Penn. He scored on a 37-yard dash in the second period and then went 45 yards on a reverse play late in the fourth quarter to settle the contest.
Jake Crouthamel again was outstanding for Dartmouth and in this contest he gained 55 yards on the ground to bring his three-year total to 1,261 yards, to eclipse the former Dartmouth individual rushing record of 1,237 yards set by full-back Bill Roberts '50.
The Indians had a real chance to tie up the game, possibly to win, early in the final period. They went 55 yards and had the ball on the Quaker 19-yard stripe, but with inches needed for a first down, quarterback Bill Gundy was stopped on a fourth-down quarterback sneak and the Quakers took over. Had Dartmouth scored, the general feeling is that the Indians might well have won this game and gone on the following week to defeat Brown.
