With deep sadness, we report the passing of two loyal members of our class . . . "Mac" McDavitt and "Nick" Nickerson. To Ed Hanlon, Bob Salinger and Bleeck Williams, we express our gratitude for the fine obituaries they have written.
We were pleasantly surprised to discover, with the cooperation of Charlotte (Mrs. Hugh) Morrison, that there are now 32 '26 sons in Hanover: - five freshmen, three sophomores, thirteen juniors, six seniors, and five post-graduate students. The five new September arrivals were Canfield Hadlock's son Dan, Dick Lattimore's son Alex, Art Nathanson's son Bob, Don Norstrand's son Pete, and Stebby Stebbins' son Bardwell.
We are indebted to Hal Marshall for thisaccount of the '26 get-together at the Penngame: -
Before the game there was an impromptu picnic on the banks of the Connecticut in the boathouse area, close to the Norwich-Hanover Bridge. This was attended by the Worthingtons, Salingers, Esquerres, Norstrands, Churches, Mitchells, Harwoods and Marshalls. Entertainment was provided by Del Worthington recalling some of the amusing incidents during the 1925 football season involving Oberlander, Tully, Sage, McPhail, et al.
Following the game, the above group, with the exception of the Churches, met with the Redmans, Orrs, Carrs, Roberts and Rankins for dinner at the Bonnie Oaks on Lake Morey. This was the headquarters of seven couples of Twenty-sixers and provided a natural rallying point. The Rankins just made it after being involved in making plans with college authorities most of the day for our next official reunion in 1962.
Other members of the Class seen during the weekend on the Hanover plain were Chuck Abbott, Jake Jacobus, Russ Clark, Ed Emerson, Henry Bixby, Fink Poor, Dick Eberhart, Russ Newcomb, Dave Harriman, Dick Mandel, Sid Hayward, Wee McClintock and Danny Drury. The Abbotts, by the way, had been in Hanover for some time; Lois is taking a course in Conversational French while Chuck is enrolled in an American History course under Prof. Stilwell. Judging from the enthusiasm with which they are tackling their study assignments and the kick they are getting out of it, this is a wonderful idea. Chuck has an hour exam this coming Thursday before they end their vacation and leave for home.
In the Haverhill (Mass.) Independent's Community Builders series, an illustrated feature on Henry Bixby, and his brother Chesley '23, states that:
Both brothers are graduates of Dartmouth and Amos Tuck School. They started in their company s training program, and worked up. G. Henry Bixby Jr. is Treasurer of William E. Bixby Co., Bixby Box Toe Co., and President of William E. Bixby Bldg. Materials Inc. He enjoys sailing, and is an accomplished organist. He is a director of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, a trustee of the Y.M.C.A. and the Old Ladies' Home Association, and a past president of the Haverhill Rotary Club.
Paul Allen's job is the subject of a two-column feature article in the New YorkTribune, which says, in part: -
The central library of the world's largest oil producer and distributor, Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, located on the sixteenth floor at 30 Rockefeller feller Plaza, is properly recognized as one of Standard's most valued and reliable "tools." It includes more than 16,000 volumes, plus around 2,500 weekly, monthly and quarterly and other periodicals ... and pamphlets galore. Besides the material in the central library, another 34,000 items are housed in other departments, but all are indexed in the central card catalog.
For a top-grade library, it follows that a top-flight librarian is required. Jersey Standard has such a specialist in the quiet and studious Paul Allen. He served as "reference librarian at Dartmouth College for twelve years. Among his other qualifications: — A master's degree in library science from Columbia; four years as a civilian specialist in the Office of Naval Intelligence; two years of acquisition work for the United Nations library.
A picture and story in the Boston Herald announce that "Richard M. Nichols of Wellesley was elected president of the Museum of Science at the 128th annual meeting of the Board. The new president, senior partner of the firm of Goodwin, Procter & Hoar, has long been active in civic affairs and charity work."
On behalf of the Jack Roberts' family, Dot sends this newsy letter: -
Our daughter Beverly Ann permitted Jack to play the father-of-the-bride role last summer, when she was married to John Mulder of Montclair. The bride's brother and the groom's brother were Dartmouth '57 roommates at Hanover. Since Jack seems reluctant to toot the family horn, I m sending the news that three days after the wedding Jack was made an Assistant Vice President or the First National City Bank of New York. Our son, John Jr., is in his second year at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
It being "That season" ... and no offense, please, Larry Vermillion ... we wonder whether your middle and last names, Rudolphus Vermillion, have caused callous cronies to call you a cousin of our own red-nosed brain-child! And so, a joyful Christmas to you all.
