A new year is here, but some notes are left over from 1995. A nice note from Glen Hill in Silver Spring, Md., thanked the class for the memorial book purchased in the name of her hubby of 50 years, Wayne. She expressed the fervent wish that "they needed a bass in that heavenly choir when they called Wayne."
Another note from a reliable source, Jack Faunce, the new '4O secretary, advises that he occasionally sees GeorgeCanfield. George is recovering nicely from a stroke in Madison, Conn., with the help of his third wife Mitsy. A recent arrival in my favored city of Sarasota are the Atwoods, Doug and Francine. Their new address is 3790 Countryside Road, 34233. They are finding plenty of new bridge players and Doug attends some of the D. Club of Sarasota bimonthly luncheon meetings, now presided over by President Don Taber. After 27 years of selfless labor for CARE in such deprived places as Bangladesh, the At woods deserve retirement in the more pleasant surroundings of the Florida Gulf Coast.
Another arrival locally is Dr. ZekeBillings, with his wife Margaret, who moved from Connecticut in November to Don Taber's retirement resort. The Billings will receive mail and calls at 7979 South Tamiami Trail, Apt. 162, Sarasota, Fla. 34231; telephone (941) 921-4970. Les andLinda Davis are still thriving on their cattle ranch in Cimarron, N.M., and entertaining visiting '41s, including our prexy, DonStillman and wife Pat, who stopped overnight on a fall trip to the West Coast. Don reported that Linda Davis was soon to be inducted into the Cowgirl Hall of Fame, an honor also being bestowed on Dale Evans. Perhaps Les will join Roy Rogers in serenading the ladies with "Happy Trails."
And now for a trip down memory lane. Who can forget the disastrous hurricane that greeted our return to Hanover for our sophomore year? The wind that toppled ancient elms on Main Street was a shocker, but it brought out a great spirit of teamwork between town and students as they worked side by side on the massive cleanup. I recently reviewed our Aegis yearbook and found evidence of early interests of our classmates. George Dreher was active in the Christian Union and he certainly carried on his religious work during a career in the ministry. Bob Thorne was active in the Natural History Club and he went on to become a world-renowned botanist and lecturer. The fencing team included ChipDeming and Gene Stollerman, who graduated from sabres and foils to scalpels, forceps, and other medical instruments.
I also noted that Dick Hill was treasurer of the fledgling Rowing Club. This must have been a springboard for his leap into banking and fundraising. The latter effort continues as I reread the recent fine letter that he and Unc Richardson sent to us all about the special need for giving in our 55 th Reunion year. Let's all heed their appeal for extra help this year; our goal is more than twice the amount we gave in 1995.
