Trusting that although it is a small column, there are those who read it, here is some of the latest on the men of '60 and also a few tidbits which managed to be overlooked earlier this year.
Looking back to June 30, the wedding of our classmate Jack Herrick came as a boon to the legal profession. Expecting only to discover the path to a keen legal mind in law school, Jack found in addition Mary Jean Taylor of Sioux Falls, S. Dak. (class of '60 at Smith) the girl he married last June. Mary Jean and Jack are both in their third year of study here at Northwestern University Law School. There are really quite a number of Dartmouth people in the Chicago area, and the ranks seem to be swelling all the time. Only a short time ago Jim D. (Moose) and Ginny Graham, with their daughter Carolyn, arrived fresh out of the Army, which according to Jim was nothing less than dull. Seems to be a common description of our nation's armed forces as viewed by many of our classmates. Anyway, Jim is beginning work toward a Ph.D. in history at the Northwestern Graduate School in between musings about defining an American National character.
Rumblings of Dartmouth lore in the deep South arrived recently from Skip Savage with a blow by blow description of how BobShields, Jay Baker, Butch Hitchcock, and Skip flooded the wedding of Gordon Biggar and Virginia Worm with abundant joy and merriment. The notable occasion was on Aug. 18 in Macon, Ga. Mind you, this is only one version of the contribution made by these four loyal sons, but from a picture sent by Skip taken at the bachelor party, it's very likely that there are and were other versions of the Dartmouth influence. Good work, men, and I do hope that guy second from the left is beginning to feel better by now. Other news from Skip tells of JohnHalvorsen hard at work in a bank in Denver, and Billy Watson "who also serves" by paratrooping in North Carolina.
To the long list of postgraduate academic honors compiled already by the class of '60, there can be proudly added the Fulbright Scholarship Awards received recently by George Stambolian and Reed Browning. George is off to France for a year to study modern French literature, and Reed has gone to Vienna to continue his work in history. Good luck, good fun, and congratulations to both of these chaps.
Understand that Al Muglia has just been named assistant town planner in West Hartford, Conn. Earlier this year, Al completed his M.A. in government administration at Penn's Wharton School. Roger Schulz was married on Aug. 4 to Marilyn Jordan of New Haven, Conn. Attending Roger were classmates, David Bond and George Rodgers. Don't know what Roger and Marilyn's plans are for the immediate future. Another August wedding was that of John Mitchell and Melinda Marsters of Rochester, N.Y., with Bill Langley up from New York City to bolster John's courage. John and Melinda are planning to make their home in Manhattan.
In his second year as a research fellow at the Rockefeller Institute in New York City (where electron microscopes are as plentiful as electron microscopists and the air is charged with the scent of Nobel Prizes) Jim Foch with wife, Garda, is closing in on the mysteries of physics. Jim and Garda have a cozy little apartment in the heart of Manhattan, but find frequent cause to make the Hanover scene and escape the less pastoral aura of New York. In digression once again, it seems that just about the only disadvantage to living in the glorious Midwest is the lack of proximity to Hanover, but then no area can offer everything. Also hard at work in New York City is Alan Friedman who is studying the law at NYU Law School. No details on Al's frame of mind, but let's assume it's the very best. Lou Perullo has left New York to go to work in Boston as a space buyer. Not exactly sure what this entails, but such is the shallow mind of the medical student. Speaking of medicine, Shellie Lippe, Dick Petrie, and Eric Sailer are up to certain mischief flatting together in Montreal. All three did their pre-clinical medical studies at the Dartmouth Medical School and are now finishing their medical degrees at McGill University. These young doctors' most recent contribution to medical science establishes positive evidence for a correlation between getting drunk and hangover. Not much of an observation granted - but it's a beginning. Another lad nearly finished with his medical degree is Thornton Kline, studying at Boston U. Medical School. Thornton was married on Aug. 11 in Birmingham, Ala., to Genny Jones - class of '60 at Wellesley. I should imagine those days of the grinding and intense pre-med-student life seem far behind to all of these men.
Wedding bells for '6os were busy in the month of September also. Dan (Walter)Daniels married Caroline Evans of Amesbury, Mass., early in the month and whisked his bride away for a honeymoon in New Hampshire. Dan and Caroline are both doing graduate work in physics at the University of Maryland and will be living near the campus in Hyattsville, Md. Adrian Parsegian served Dan as an usher with the wedding being held in Worcester, Mass. JohnPassegio and Camille Canzano's wedding was also in early September. Johnny is studying dentistry at NYU giving further witness to the totipotentiality of the Dartmouth liberal arts. The third member of this trio of September bridegrooms is our own John Bracken. John and Cynthia Cooper - a Middlebury graduate - were married in Floral Park, N.Y., and like the new Mr. and Mrs. Daniels chose New England for their honeymoon.
One final bit of news has Stan Jones assuming duties as assistant minister at Center Congregational Church in Torrington, Conn. In this capacity, Stan will be completing his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Yale. All the very best Stan.
They told us seven years ago that we'd girdle the earth. The spread is indeed significant from a geographical viewpoint, but what a variety of lives and vocations!
Have a Merry Christmas.
Former Dartmouth hockey ace Jake Haertl '61 and bride Cindy Rendell (Bennington)get an appropriate honor from ushers Bill Edgar '62 (l) and Tom Conger '61.
