GIFTS and bequests received by Dartmouth College during the fiscal year 1957-58 totaled more than twice as much as the College had ever before received in one year. The grand total of $10,113,082 in gifts and bequests reflected the success of the first year of the Capital Gifts Campaign, which produced paid-in contributions of $3,799,051. The 1958 Alumni Fund total of $455,301 is also part of the record showing.
In addition to the gifts received through the two fund campaigns, a number of other substantial gifts and bequests were made in 1957-58. These included $1,071,678 from John D. Rockefeller Jr. for the Hopkins Center; grants of $1,500,000 from the Rockefeller Foundation, $1,000,000 from the Commonwealth Fund, and $550,000 additional from the Ford Foundation toward the $10,000,000 campaign for funds to expand and re-house the Dartmouth Medical School and its related research, plus $298,058 from the National Institutes of Health in support of various current research projects.
Among bequests received in 1957-58 were $622,679 from the estate of L. Herbert Ballou for the Tuck School, and $512,252 from the estates of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Davidson, Class of 1880, in support of faculty salaries.
Other contributions of $100,000 or more were an additional $125,801 from a trust created by Edward Tuck, Class of 1862; grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation totaling $107,580 for research, scholarships and restricted use; an additional payment of $102,712 from an anonymous donor towards his pledge of $1,000,000 for the Daniel Webster National Scholarship program; and $100,000 from the late Leon E. Williams '15 for endowment of faculty salaries.
Gifts from corporations totaled $198,866, compared with $194,183 for the year before, excluding corporate gifts made to the Alumni Fund. This total included $21,353 from the New England Colleges Fund as Dartmouth's share of the $304,675 contributed to the Fund.
There were, of course, a great many other gifts and bequests of sizable amount, all contributing importantly to the record $10,113,082 received in 1957-58. And Dartmouth alumni provided the great bulk of this support.
