FINANCIAL aid provided by Dartmouth College during the present academic year will total more than a million dollars. Climbing steadily in the postwar years, especially as tuition charges have been raised, the total of scholarship grants, loans, and Dining Association earnings will reach the new level of approximately $1,022,700 for 1958-59. This compares with last year's financial aid total of $981,294.
Outright grants to Dartmouth undergraduates will increase nearly $10,000, from $755,898 last year to $765,700; loans will increase nearly $5,000, from $115,325 to $120,000; and earnings at the Dartmouth Dining Association will be the same at $70,000. Also included in the million-dollar total is $62,000 in scholarships for the sons and daughters of faculty and administrative officers, either at Dartmouth or elsewhere.
The total number of Dartmouth undergraduates receiving aid this year is estimated at 815, of whom 750 are getting either an outright scholarship or combination of scholarship and loan, and 65 are getting loans only. The 750 getting outright grants represent 26.4% of the undergraduates enrolled. The average grant of $1,064 is UP from the $1,025 ast year, to allow for increased room and board charges.
Freshmen receiving outright grants this year number 194 or 25.2% of the class. The average grant for this group is $1,155, up from the $1,100 of last year.
The program of benefits for children of faculty and administrative officers is a new and comprehensive one inaugurated this fall. It provides cash grants for tuition, up to the amount of Dartmouth's own fee, for study at four-year colleges of arts and sciences. These grants amount to $30,500 this year. The College is also providing $16,000 of scholarship aid for faculty sons at Dartmouth and another $15,500 for students at Dartmouth on the tuition exchange plan, in which Dartmouth will no longer participate when present commitments are met.
