At the expense of omitting a few gems from classmates, this month's column will be devoted exclusively to our widows. The loyalty of the Dartmouth man (and since our day, woman) is too well documented and known to require comment. The extension of that loyalty to the Dartmouth spouse and the extent to which such spouse is welcomed into the Dartmouth family is not always sufficiently recognized. I believe that no class has a finer group of widows than ours. I am certain that no class has a memorial gift chairman as fine as our Beatie Adams. I quote from a letter received from her in November, "I am very proud of my 'widows,' all 157 of them, many of whom have given so generously to the Dartmouth Annual Fund. Their record during the 12 years I have been memorial gift chairman is truly outstanding."

Incidentally I note that the number of widows now exceeds the number of surviving classmates. Beatie also asked me to thank all of the many members of the class who wrote her while she was recently out of circulation, as reported in an earlier issue. Her recovery now appears complete, for which we are all grateful.

Polly Hartshorn, our cochairman of the widows' program/reports fulfilling a lifetime dream of getting to see the Yukon River in Alaska, where her father went in the Gold Rush days of 1898.

Bobbie Ahlquist Currie, widow of Maury Ahlquist, reports that she and her husband, Fred, spend a lot of time traveling in caravan in their airstream trailer. She comments, "This is a wholly new experience for me. It is certainly a way of life to keep one active - no time for the old rocking chair."

Mildred Sly, widow of Belden Sly, writes from Florida and expresses approval of my still calling her Spill, as we all did when Belden and I roomed together at law school and they were engaged.

The bad news is that, as documented in the March issue, Daniel Pingree, KennethWellman Davis, Frederick North Eaton, and Calvin M. Simonds all died between November 4 and December 1, 1986. Our sympathy goes out to the families of each of them and especially to each of the widows, Elizabeth Pingree, RosalieDavis, Helen Eaton, and Rachel Simonds.
